Palestinian Statehood Resolution Fails
The UN Security Council has rejected a Palestinian resolution calling for an Israeli withdrawal from the West Bank and East Jerusalem and the establishment of a Palestinian state by late 2017. The resolution had called for negotiations to be based on 1967 borders and called for a peace deal within 12 months. Even if the draft had received the minimum nine votes in favor, it would have been defeated by a U.S. veto.

Alabama residents still have at least a year to obtain a new form of identification. STAR ID, which stands for Secure, Trusted and Reliable Identification, is the state's way of complying with the REAL ID Act of 2005. All but 15 states and territories are in compliance with the act. There are currently over 3.8 million licensed drivers in Alabama, and over 46,000 have obtained a STAR ID.

The United States has found itself allied with Iran in the battle to defeat the Islamic State of Iraq and Syria (ISIS). ISIS/ISIL is the successor to the group commonly known as
al-Qaeda in Iraq (AQI). Last spring the U.S. State Department announced its decision to use "Islamic State of Iraq and the Levant" (ISIL) as the group's primary name, most likely to avoid reminding the world that the U.S. aid to the anti-Assad rebel coalition in Syria benefited ISIS.

Former EU President, Jose Manuel Barroso, said that Britain is no longer at the centre of the European Union under the leadership of David Cameron as it was under Tony Blair. In a further swipe at Britain's status in the world, the Portuguese politician said the U.S. president was now more likely to call the German chancellor than the UK prime minister if he wanted to get European countries on board for international action.

As United Nations officials welcome the entry into force of the UN Arms Trade Treaty (ATT), its progress in the U.S. remains hampered by significant Senate opposition and funding prohibitions. Under UN procedures the U.S. would be liable for 22 percent of the budget for the ATT secretariat, the body that will oversee its implementation. The U.S. is among 70 nations that have signed, but not ratified the treaty.

Palestinians to Outnumber Jews

The number of Jews and Palestinians living between the Jordan River and the Mediterranean will be equal by 2016, according to estimates by the Palestinian Central Bureau Statistics (PCBS). By 2020, the Palestinians will outnumber the Jews, according to the report. According to a PLO official, the projection could lead to a demographic crisis which could jeopardize the two-state solution and lead to a de-facto one-state solution.

Homeland Security Extends REAL ID

The U.S. Department of Homeland Security (DHS) recently announced an extension of document enrollment rules for the Real ID Act. Document enrollment dates have now been moved to Oct. 1, 2020. The implementation of the final rule follows a multi-year plan to help budget-strapped states conform their document issuance and production processes to the standards set forth in the REAL ID Act.

North Korea Blasts U.S. for Sanctions

North Korea criticized the United States for slapping on Pyongyang officials and organizations for a cyber attack on Sony Pictures. An unnamed spokesman for North Korea's Foreign Ministry denied any role in the breach of tens of thousands of confidential Sony emails and business files and accused the United States of "groundlessly" stirring up hostility. North Korea has already been under tough U.S. and international sanctions over its nuclear and missile programs.

Palestinians Flag on Temple Mount

"Al-Quds [Jerusalem] is Arab and the capital of Palestine and al-Aksa Mosque is a place of Muslim prayer," declared United Arab List-Ta'al head MK Ahmed Tibi as he raised the Palestinian Flag on the Temple Mount. The procession he led was meant to celebrate the birthday of the prophet Muhammad.
