Persistent Campaign Against Islamic State
Lt. Gen. William Mayville, director of operations for the Joint Chiefs of Staff, said the recent attacks on the Islamic State and at least one other militant group were the start of "a credible and sustainable, persistent campaign." Jordan confirmed its role in the strikes but stressed that it acted in self-defense and did not directly refer to having acted in concert with the United States. Other partners in the campaign stressed fraternal Arab relationships but avoided references to the Washington-led campaign.Read More > | | | |

The United States and allies have launched airstrikes against Sunni militants in Syria. American fighter jets and armed Predator and Reaper drones struck a broad array of targets in territory controlled by the militants. American defense officials said the targets included weapons supplies, depots, barracks and buildings. When the House of Commons resumes after in October, British MPs will have an unprecedented opportunity to vote on whether there should be a Palestinian state. A group of MPs from all major political parties have secured a debate under a relatively new procedure for a full-scale, whole day's debate in the Commons chamber.
