Jesus warned that the last days would be characterized by rumors of war. The rumor of war in Ukraine is superpowered by Russia’s repeated threat of using nuclear weapons. But Ukraine and several other former Soviet bloc nations fit Bible prophecyin another powerful way. One of the most famous and detailed prophecies in the Bible concerns an invasion of Israel by a confederation of nations. Chapters 38 and 39 of Ezekielgive the details, including a specific list of the nations involved. The first two verses say, “And the word of the Lord came to me saying, ‘Son of man, set your face toward Gog of the land of Magog, the prince of Rosh, Meshech, and Tubal, and prophesy againsthim.’” [NASB] It’s obvious from that passage and others that Gog is not a nation, but a national leader. The word “Gog” means “high,” “top guy,” or “supreme.” Thefirst century Jewish historian, Josephus, wrote that, “Magog is called the Scythians by the Greeks.” The Greeks used the word “Scythia” to refer to the region north and east of the Black Sea. Today, that includes, not just Russia, but also Ukraine. The Scythians also ruled the area east of the Caspian Sea that is today occupied by Kazakhstan, Kyrgyzstan, Uzbekistan, Turkmenistan, and Tajikistan.Each of these nations were once part of the Soviet Union. Vladimir Putin seems intent on bringing them back into the sphere of Russian control. Also, each of these nations is predominantly Muslim, which may also contribute to their desire to one day join acoalition of nations against Israel. But the first step in Putin’s plan centers on Ukraine. In area, it is Europe’s second largest nation. It gained its independence from the Soviet Unionin 1991. At that time, Ukraine possessed one-third of the Soviets’ nuclear armaments. With 1,900 warheads, Ukraine then held the third largest nuclear arsenal in the world. In 1994, Russia, Britain, and the United States signed the Budapest Memorandum on SecurityAssurances. They promised to ensure Ukraine’s security if it gave up its large nuclear arsenal. The sad and horrible lesson to every other nation in the world is that if you have nukes, don’t give them up ever — no matter what. Today, if Ukrainestill had its nuclear weapons, Russia would not be threatening. It’s as simple as that. Promises from Britain and the United States were not worth the paper they were printed on. The other protector of Ukrainian security was to be that benevolent nation known as Russia. Now, it all seems like a cruel joke. In 2014, Russia stoleCrimea from Ukraine. That gave the Russian military better access to the Black Sea. Today, Russia’s goal in invading Ukraine does not seem to be an annexation of the country, but a move to place a puppet government there. In all this, remember that no matter what their nations do, people can still turn to Christ. Iran is another key part of that Ezekiel 38 coalition.And Iran is experiencing a tremendous number of people turning to Jesus. Prophecy tells us what some nations will do, but that does not predetermine the actions of individuals within those nations. Unfortunately, the guys running the show in both countries are not exactly sane, and they deeply, deeply distrustone another. So what happens when a bunch of lunatics decide to play a game of chicken with the fate of the entire world at stake? Unfortunately, it appears that we are about to find out. When Donald Trump was still in the White House, both the United States and Russia pretty much respected the status quo. But once Joe Biden took power, things changed dramatically. Overthe past year, the Biden administration has provoked the Russians over and over again, and it became clear that there would be a major effort to add Ukraine to NATO. The Biden administration assumed that they could push the Russians around without any consequences. But instead, the Russians sent more than 100,000 troops to the border with Ukraine. It is the largest Russian military mobilization since World War II, and it is clearlymeant as a threat. The Russians are most definitely threatening to invade Ukraine, and they are assuming that this will motivate the Biden administration and other western leaders to negotiate. But Biden and other western leaders are not blinking. They are absolutely determined not to give the Russians anything that they want, even if the requests are reasonable. What this means is that Biden and other western leaders have decided to call Vladimir Putin�s bluff. Okay, so what happens if Putin is not bluffing? On Monday, we witnessed a very angry exchange between the U.S. and Russia during a UN Security Council meeting� Russia accused the West on Monday of �whipping up tensions� over Ukraine and said the U.S. had brought �pure Nazis� to power in Kyiv as the U.N. Security Council held astormy and bellicose debate on Moscow�s troop buildup near its southern neighbor. U.S. Ambassador Linda Thomas-Greenfield shot back that Russia�s growing military force of more than 100,000 troops along Ukraine�s borders was �the largest mobilization� in Europe in decades, adding that there has been a spike in cyberattacks and Russian disinformation. And then on Tuesday, Putin publicly warned that Russian security concerns are being completely ignored� �We are carefully analyzing the written responses received from the United States and NATO,� Putin said Tuesday during a press conference with Hungary Prime Minister ViktorOrban. �But it is already clear that fundamental Russian concerns ended up being ignored,� he lamented. �We did not see adequate consideration of our three key demands regardingthe prevention of NATO expansion, the refusal to deploy strike facilities near Russia�s borders, and the return of the bloc�s military infrastructure in Europe to the state in 1997.� This crisis could be over tomorrow if Biden and other western leaders agreed not to put western missiles in Ukraine and to not admit Ukraine as a member of NATO. Just like we didn�t want Russian missiles in Cuba in the 1960s, the Russians don�t want NATO missiles in Ukraine now. Unfortunately, Biden�s foreign policy team has decided that it simply cannot give Russia anything that it wants, and so there will be no deal. And White House Press Secretary Jen Psaki just compared Putin to a �fox� on top of a henhouse� White House Press Secretary Jen Psaki slammed Russia for trying to turn the rhetoric around and express they�re worried about a threat coming from Ukraine � especially ifit were to join NATO. �When the fox is screaming from the top of the henhouse that he�s scared of the chickens, which is essentially what they�re doing, that fear isn�t recorded as a statementof fact,� Psaki said during her daily briefing Tuesday. The Biden administration is not taking the Russians seriously. But they should. We are now closer to war with Russia than we have been since the Cuban missile crisis of the 1960s, and at this point even a small error could cause a horrifying globalconflict to erupt. With each passing day, even more Russian forces move into the border zone. For example, we just learned that two more battalions of Spetsnaz soldiers �are being moved tothe Belarus-Ukraine border�� Two battalions of crack Russian Spetsnaz soldiers are being moved to the Belarus-Ukraine border, stoking fears of an imminent invasion on the orders of President VladimirPutin. Those commandos will be joining 5,000 Spetsnaz troops that are already there� They will join another another 5,000 Spetsnaz commandos already in position, according to Western military experts, who warn they could form the spearhead of a much largerforce estimated at around 80,000 soldiers, including Russian and Belarus regulars. Unlike the �woke� special forces in the United States, Spetsnaz forces are incredibly good at what they do. Not too many that have gotten into a firefight with them have lived to tell about it. We have also learned that Russia and Belarus will be conducting �major war games� in the border region in the middle of this month� Major war games will then be conducted from February 10 and will see Russian and Belarusian units engage in a 10-day simulation of the �interception and suppression of foreignmilitary aggression and counter-terrorism operations� in what Shoygu dubbed �The Allied Resolve of 2022�. Shoygu did not specify how many troops would take part in the war games, but Thomas-Greenfield said the U.S. believes Russia will post up to 30,000 troops in Belarus byearly February. It appears that the Biden administration is dead set against any sort of a deal with the Russians, and so now Putin has a decision to make. Will he be the sane one and back down? Meanwhile, we are being told that Iran is just �weeks� away from having enough fissile material for a nuclear bomb� In the long list of foreign crises between which President Biden and his administration are bouncing, Iran has not gotten as much play in recent weeks in light of the deterioratingsituation in Europe between Russian forces and the people of Ukraine. But according to a senior State Department official, Iran is continuing to move along with its nuclear ambitions and is now �weeks, not months� away from having enough fissile material fora nuclear bomb. One way or another, a war between Israel and Iran is going to begin. And once that war erupts, the Middle East will never be the same again. We are right on the precipice of so many military conflicts that we have been warned about for years. If global leaders were sane, they would be working as hard as they can to try to prevent World War III from happening. While rockets fired at Israel �may be launched fromBeirut or Gaza � the origin is Tehran,� said Bennett, continuing that, �the weaker Tehran is, so will its proxies be weaker; the hungrier the head of the octopus becomes, its tentacles will shrink � consequently, we will meet at our borders something muchweaker.� As an expected consequence of reviving the 2015 Joint Comprehensive Plan of Action (JCPOA) at ongoing talks in Vienna, Bennett warned that �removing sanctions and floodingbillions of dollars into the coffers of this (Ayatollah) regime means, my friends, more rockets, more UAVs, more terror cells, more cyberattacks and disinformation campaigns, more of everything. By the way, not only against us � it will also be directed atour American allies in the region and our other partners.� Prime Minister Bennett reiterated that likely concessions by the international community to Iran render a salvaged-JCPOA against Israel�s best interests. �We believe thatthe Iranians will continue being Iranians. We see it already now, during these negotiations, at a time when the Iranian Foreign Ministry officials sit in Vienna with the global powers� at the same moment the Islamic Revolutionary Guards Corps (IRGC) behavesas a regional bully and attacks the United Arab Emirates and other locations. �This is the exact definition of �negotiating under fire� � this is extortion,� underscored Bennett, stressing that, �If an agreement is signed and the stream of dollarsresumes, we all understand that the Iranian aggression will only intensify in the region.� His government�s strategy of countering Tehran �in every way� while undertaking any necessary action to provide security for Israeli citizens is the most effective, assertedBennett, whether the JCPOA is revived or ultimately short-lived �until the sunset takes effect.� So-called �sunset clauses� refer to the expiration � as early as 2024 � of the �snapback� mechanism to restore international sanctions if Iran violates restrictions on advancedcentrifuges imposed by previous United Nations Security Council Resolutions. While acknowledging that �The United States was and will always remain our best friend,� the Israeli leader went on to underscore that Washington�s best interests are notalways compatible with Jerusalem�s. �We speak about it very genuinely and understand one another,� he said, noting that, �The US position in the region is diminishing. Her eyes are naturally focused on theborder of Russia and Ukraine currently, and deeply embroiled in a multi-year strategic conflict with China in the long run. This is the reality, there is no point in complaining about it. We must act within those existing circumstances � not in a world ofwishes.� Any vacuum in the geo-political arena will immediately filled by another force, said Bennett, adding that this new reality creates challenges but also opportunities forIsrael. �The place of the United States in the region, God forbid, can be filled by forces of terror and hate; however, with the right steps, it can be filled by Israel. The infrastructureof friendship that emerged with our neighbors can constitute a beginning of a multidimensional regional alliance. Together, we will contend better with the challenges that are introduced by radical forces and disrupters of stability in the region,� he said. The Prime Minister went on to unveil a new ground-breaking Israeli military development that will radically shift cost-effectiveness of the country�s multi-layered aerialdefense array. �Within a year, the IDF will deploy a laser-based interception system on an experimental and then operational basis, initially in the south followed by additional locations,� enabling Israel to be �surrounded by a protective wall of lasers against missiles, rockets, unmanned aerial vehicles (UAVs) and other threats; thus repelling the strongest enemy risks.� The initiative will reverse the �economic equation,� he said, ultimatelyminimizing Israel�s defense budget while compelling adversaries to invest greater sums. �If you are able to intercept a missile or rocket with an electric pulse that costs several dollars, we will in fact thwart the �ring of fire� erected by Iran on our borders� following an initial investment that over the course of several decades demonstrating there is no �pay off� to attack Israel. �This new generation of Israeli aerial defenses could also serve our friends in the region,� Bennett pointed out, who also contend difficult threats posed by Iran and itsproxies.
