Karma or God's Discipline?

Karma or God's Discipline? - J.L. Robb - http://www.omegaletter.com/articles/articles.asp?ArticleID=8117

Is the world being Karmalized? Until I started really believing in God, I thought all paybacks by nature were the result of Karma. Everyone seemed to use the term whenever someone would suffer tragedy, or in some cases, receive excessive rewards or tribute. Karma seemed to happen to us, yet we were not aware it was happening at all. It sometimes takes years to realize you have been Karmalized.

I did not know that Karma was a Buddhist belief at the time, but it wouldn't have mattered at that time in my life. It was only later, when I truly found God, that I realized the Buddhists were really talking about God's Justice. According to a Buddhist awareness website:

Karma is the law of moral causation. The theory of Karma is a fundamental doctrine in Buddhism. This belief was prevalent in India before the advent of the Buddha. Nevertheless, it was the Buddha who explained and formulated this doctrine in the complete form in which we have it today.

What is the cause of the inequality that exists among mankind?

Why should one person be brought up in the lap of luxury, endowed with fine mental, moral and physical qualities, and another in absolute poverty, steeped in misery?

Why should one person be a mental prodigy, and another an idiot?

Why should one person be born with saintly characteristics and another with criminal tendencies?

Why should some be linguistic, artistic, mathematically inclined, or musical from the very cradle?

Why should others be congenitally blind, deaf, or deformed?

Why should some be blessed, and others cursed from their births?

Either this inequality of mankind has a cause, or it is purely accidental. No sensible person would think of attributing this unevenness, this inequality, and this diversity to blind chance or pure accident.

In this world nothing happens to a person that he does not for some reason or other deserve. Usually, men of ordinary intellect cannot comprehend the actual reason or reasons. The definite invisible cause or causes of the visible effect is not necessarily confined to the present life, they may be traced to a proximate or remote past birth.

According to Buddhism, this inequality is due not only to heredity, environment, "nature and nurture", but also to Karma. In other words, it is the result of our own past actions and our own present doings. We ourselves are responsible for our own happiness and misery. We create our own Heaven. We create our own Hell. We are the architects of our own fate.

In the passage above, God's Justice could replace Karma in most instances.

Many years ago when I began my Christian journey in a serious manner, I was scolded by a more experienced Christian when I used the term "God's punishment."

"Oh," she said, rolling her eyes, "God does NOT punish us. He disciplines us."

Alrighty then. My thesaurus says they are one and the same.

As a small boy, I was a little rambunctious (just a little) and there was more than one adult figure who warned me, "God's gonna get you, boy!" I suppose Dr. Benjamin Spock would've had a stroke, hearing this threat; but for kids, it worked. I believed it; and as a result I tried always not to steal, kill, tell many fibs, etc. Dr. Spock was wrong about so many things, and we pay the price in today's narcissistic world.

There are reasons to fear God's discipline, and it is spelled out plainly in the Bible's Old Testament:

The fear of the Lord is the beginning of wisdom; all who follow his precepts have good understanding. To him belongs eternal praise. Psalm 111:10 NIV

The fear of the LORD is the beginning of wisdom, and knowledge of the Holy One is understanding. Proverbs 9:10 NIV

Wisdom. A fear of God was the beginning of wisdom.

Understanding. Knowledge of God's desires and rules is understanding.

One probably will not find those definitions in a dictionary, but that is how these two words are defined in the Bible.

Our leaders have no fear of God, so they lack understanding and wisdom. It is obvious in the leadership so many portray. That's not to say that our leaders do not believe in God, only that they have lost the fear.

A few weeks ago when the Supreme Court redefined the biblical definition of marriage after 5,000+ years of human civilization, there were many posts on social media deriding Christians and the response we would probably exhibit after the SCOTUS ruling. There is a lot of Christian derision going on in the present world.

"Oh no!! The evangelicals are going to be screaming that the wrath of God is going to destroy the country!" some exclaimed and others, "Here comes the boogeyman."

To the folk who make such proclamations, you are almost correct; and the timing may be right. Only God's wrath is not to be for a specific country but for the entire world.

Rainbow appears at World Trade Center site. September 10, 2015

God's justice doesn't need to be swift and usually is not.  Sometimes, it just sort of sneaks up on you. At least this has been my experience. It happens, and I look back and say, "Wow."

The world is having a lot of wow moments this month, and there are many more than what I have listed. I see, hear and read the word unprecedented more and more with each day.

That rainbow just may be a warning.
