WORLD AT WAR: 1.26.19 - 'Rapid military escalation' occurring between Iran and Israel

TENSIONS between Iran and Israel are "escalating and intensifying" after Israel struck Iranian targets this week, a former Pentagon official has warned.

World War 3 fears were sparked this week after Israel hit the Syrian capital of Damascus early on Monday as part of its increasingly open assault on Iran's presence there. In response, Iran issued a chilling message to arch-enemy Israel - warning it is "impatient" and ready to confront and destroy the nation in a statement issued just hours after Israel launched the air raids in Syria.

The former Pentagon official Michael Maloof has warned the situation between the two states is getting "quickly out of hand" due to the "intensified Israeli attacks".

Mr Maloof told RT America: "You have got to keep in mind that the alleged Iranian attack was in response to a prior Israeli attack on Syria.

"So, basically, the Israelis started the whole thing by firing rockets at their sites at the side of Syria.

"So what this indicates is a very rapid escalation that's occurring and Netanyahu himself basically stated that he is only going to intensify and I think this is also a prelude to something even more serious in terms of probably creating even greater uncertainty and conflict within the region itself.

"And it can happen very rapidly."

The war expert added: "If the Israelis begin to bring in aircraft and start attacking targets directly I think this, particularly with the Russian presence there, it's going to really escalate into something much greater and it is already becoming that."

Speaking after at least four Syrian soldiers were killed in the raids carried out by Tel Aviv, Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netahyahu hit back at Iran's stern warning and said he will hit back against "anyone who tries to harm us".

The operation targeted the elite Quds Force of the Iranian Revolutionary Guards, according to Israel Defense Forces.

The head of Iran's air force said on Monday the country was ready to fight Israel and destroy it.

Speaking to the Young Journalist Club, a website supervised by state television, Brigadier General Aziz Nasirzadeh said: "The young people in the air force are fully ready and impatient to confront the Zionist regime and eliminate it from the Earth."

The raid shook the night sky over Damascus with an hour of loud explosions in a second consecutive night of military action.

Israel, which regards Iran as its biggest threat, has repeatedly attacked Iranian targets and those of allied militia, including Lebanon's Hezbollah, in Syria, aiming to push them far from its frontier.

Iran Fires Rocket at Golan, Intelligence Minister: "This is Open Confrontation" - By Adam Eliyahu Berkowitz -

"Pay them according to their deeds, their malicious acts; according to their handiwork pay them, give them their deserts." Psalms 28:4 (The Israel Bible)

A daring Israeli daylight airstrike led to Iranian forces in Syria firing a rocket at the Golan leading an Israeli minister to call this "open confrontation with Iran."

The Israeli government confirmed they carried out a daring daytime airstrike against Iranian military targets in Syria on Sunday.

The IDF stated that approximately ten targets were hit including weapons warehouses at the Damascus International Airport and, in other locations, an Iranian intelligence site and an Iranian training camp. The Israeli strikes also targeted multiple Syrian surface-to-air missile batteries.

Shortly after the airstrikes, IDF Iron Dome anti-missile systems shot down a projectile fired at Israel from Syria on Sunday. The rocket fire was observed by Israeli civilians skiing on the slopes of Mount Hermon.

The IDF blamed Iranian Al Quds forces for the missile fired at Israel.

The Russian military alleged additional Israeli airstrikes were carried out in the early morning on Monday.

"On January 21, 2019, between 2:11 a.m. and 2:56 a.m. the Israeli Air Defense carried out three airstrikes on Syria's territory from the western, southwestern, and southern directions," the Russian military statement said. The Syrian Observatory for Human Rights reported missile strikes near the Damascus airport and in areas around the capital saying the missiles hit apparent weapons depots of Iranian forces and Lebanon's Shi'ite militant group Hizballah. 11 casualties were reported.

Intelligence Minister Israel Katz discussed the recent exchange of fire on Monday morning in an interview with Army Radio.

"This was a clear message to the Iranians," Katz said in the interview. "The policy has changed. This is an open confrontation with Iran. When we need to step it up, we'll step it up."

"We won't allow their entrenchment in Syria," he said. Katz emphasized that the missile shot at Israel from Syria a direct attack. "Whoever attacks us will pay a heavy price," he warned.

It is interesting to note that a Mahan Air flight from Tehran to Damascus approaching Damascus at 1:30 PM turned around and headed away from the city. These flights listed as civilian air carriers have been accused by Israel and the U.S. of being used to carry weapons and military personnel for Syria and Hezbollah.

The message was not lost on Iran as Brig. Gen. Aziz Nasirzadeh, Commander of the Islamic Republic of Iran Air Force, addressed the media on Monday.

"Our current and future generations [in the air force] are impatient and fully ready to confront the Zionist regime and eliminate it from the Earth," Nasirzadeh said, adding, "Our future generations are learning required know-how for the promised day to destroy Israel."

Biggest Threat Facing Israel In 2019: Multi-Front War In North & South - By Benjamin Kerstein -

The Tel Aviv University-affiliated Institute for National Security Studies (INSS) presented its annual assessment of Israel's security situation to President Reuven Rivlin on Wednesday, with the primary conclusion being that a multi-front war on the Jewish state's northern and southern borders was a very real possibility.

According to the Hebrew new site Ynet, the report said, "Most of the fronts facing Israel are very volatile: Syria, Lebanon, and the Gaza Strip. Despite mutual deterrence between the sides, there is a potential for escalation to a wider confrontation and an all-out war on more than one front."

"We will find ourselves in the 'everything at once' situation in which Israel is dealing with Iran, Syria, and Hezbollah in the north, and also with terrorist organizations in the Gaza Strip," the report added.

The most serious threat, the report said, was on northern front, where Iran, Hezbollah and the Assad regime are allied. It was highly unlikely Iran would leave Syria anytime soon, and Russian aid to the Assad regime has impeded Israel's freedom of action. In addition, the quality of weaponry provided to Hezbollah by Iran has been rising. All of this threatens to cause a "First Northern War" in which Israel must confront all three enemies simultaneously, the report stated.

In the south, the report found there was very high potential of another war with Hamas. Israel must work to rebuild its deterrence against the Gaza-ruling terrorist organization, which has declined over the past year, and take action against the group's military wing. Of all the threats against Israel, this was the most likely to erupt in the short term, the report surmised.

In the West Bank, the report noted, the prospect of the Trump peace plan offered little hope for progress, though Israel might win the "blame game" following its failure. In regard to Trump in general, Israel must be aware of his unpredictability and tendency to make snap decisions without consulting allies, the report cautioned.

Regarding the Iranian nuclear program, the INSS predicted the situation would remain largely stable, with a breakout to a bomb or, on the other extreme, the fall of the Islamist ruling regime in Tehran both being unlikely.

In terms of specific policy recommendations, the INSS advised arriving at a consensus with the US on Iran's nuclear program -- making sure Israel was prepared to take military action in a breakout scenario -- and reaching understandings with the US on what a renegotiated nuclear deal should look like.

In Syria, the report went on to say, Israel must continue its battle against Iranian entrenchment, and ready itself for the possibility of the war spreading to Lebanon or even Iran itself, while avoiding a clash with Russia at almost any cost and hardening the homefront for a possible northern war.

In Gaza, Israel should refuse to deal with Hamas on any political or diplomatic level, as this would weaken moderate Palestinians and encourage the use of force, the report said.
