Sources say ship lies in wait in Mediterranean amid denials
As Russia's Caspian Sea fleet launched precision-guided cruise missiles at Syrian rebel positions, a Chinese naval vessel continued to loom menacingly in the background, maintaining its presence in the Mediterranean Sea amid Chinese denials that the People's Liberation Army will enter the Syrian conflict.
A Middle Eastern defense official affirmed the Chinese military ship is located a short trip of several "hours" from the Syrian coast. The source, who spoke on condition of anonymity, said that while China's intentions are unclear, the vessel's presence is well known to Middle Eastern and Persian Gulf countries as well as to the U.S. and Russia.
The official said that China is reluctant to directly intervene in Syria or approach Syrian waters unless the regime of Syrian President Bashar al-Assad formally requests the assistance of Chinese military advisers.
Even then, China may only take on an advisory role and not carry out military missions alongside the Russians and Syrians, the official said.
Reconfirming information reported by WND last month, the official said another option being discussed is for the Russian government to make a public gesture toward requesting the Chinese presence.
A Syrian regime source confirmed knowledge of the Chinese vessel and said no decision has been made by Assad's regime about requesting any Chinese assistance in fighting the years-long insurgency led by Middle East rebels.
Publicly, China has maintained a detached posture toward the Syrian conflict.
Chinese Foreign Minister Wang Yi said at the U.N. Security Council last week that "the international community cannot look on without lifting a finger, but also ought not to interfere arbitrarily."
"A political resolution for the Syrian crisis is the fundamental way out," he added.
And Zhang Junshe, a senior researcher at the PLA Naval Military Studies Research Institute, was quoted by the Chinese Global Times tabloid last week calling reports of a Chinese warship advancing toward Syria "purely rumors."
Junshe was speaking about the Chinese 152 Fleet, which recently finished an escort mission and in August embarked on a five-month tour to take the fleet from the Gulf of Aden to the Mediterranean Sea and the Baltic Sea.
Junshe said the fleet's mission was planned before Russia started to act in Syria.
The Middle Eastern defense official who spoke to WND denied a report from Debka.com, a private website headquartered in Israel, claiming the Chinese aircraft carrier Liaoning-CV-16 has docked at the Syrian port of Tartus, accompanied by a guided-missile cruiser.
The Debka report prompted the chatter about China entering the Syria conflict as did the Lebanese English language website Al-Masdar Al-Arabi, which two weeks ago quoted a senior Syrian Army officer stationed in Latakia as saying "the Chinese will be arriving in the coming weeks" and will join the Russian military there.
On Wednesday, acting from 1,000 miles away in the Caspian Sea, the Russian navy bombarded Syrian rebel positions. Russian Defense Minister Sergei Shoigu announced at a televised briefing that Russian ships launched 26 cruise missiles in Syria, destroying 11 targets.
The Washington Post reported the naval strikes represented the first known operational use of state-of-the-art SSN-30A Kalibr cruise missiles.
Russian President Vladimir Putin boasted the strikes showed the professionalism of Russia's military.
"We know how difficult it is to carry out this kind of anti-terrorist operation," Putin said. "Of course, it is early to draw conclusions. But what has been done so far deserves a highly positive assessment."
The Russian missiles traversed Iranian and Iraqi airspace, demonstrating clear coordination with both countries.
Iraq announced last week week it recently established an intelligence-sharing platform with the Russians, Syrians and Iranians.
The intelligence coordination could jeopardize U.S. security, because the U.S. maintains its own intelligence-sharing channels with Iraq.
The Russian strikes were backed up by a massive Syrian ground campaign, Gen. Ali Abdullah Ayoub, chief of the General Staff of the Army and Armed Forces, told Syria's SANA state-run media agency.
The agency further reported that following the Russian missile salvo "hundreds of of terrorists were confirmed dead, and tens of armored vehicles, two Grad rocket launchers and a huge ammunition depot were destroyed as a result of the airstrikes."

Sources confirm Moscow targeting U.S.-backed rebels
Russia is in Syria for the long haul, according to informed Middle Eastern security officials.
The sources, who spoke on condition of anonymity, told WND there is information Moscow is in the midst of drawing up plans for military operations in Syria through at least the spring of 2016.
The officials confirmed U.S. accusations that Russia is not only targeting ISIS but is also carrying out strikes against U.S.-backed rebels fighting the regime of Syrian President Bashar al-Assad.
The officials said that in less than one week, Russia has done more to advance the international war against ISIS than the combined achievements of Western forces fighting in Syria during the last two years.
The information comes as NATO Secretary General Jens Stoltenberg affirmed Tuesday that Russian ground troops were stationed in Syria.
The illuminating documentary "End Times Eyewitness," featuring Joel Richardson, takes you on an fascinating, firsthand journey to the front lines of the ongoing Middle Eastern revolutions.
Stoltenberg also blamed the Russians for a second incursion by Russian planes into Turkish airspace, sparking fears Moscow could expand its offensive beyond Syria and amid reports the Iraqi government may formally request Russian intervention there.
"Russian combat aircraft have violated Turkish airspace." Stoltenberg said, according to NATO's website. "This is unacceptable.
"We also have seen two of them, two violations of Turkish airspace," he added. "Intelligence that we have received provides me with reason to say it doesn't look like an accident."
Stoltenberg said Russia's first incursion into Turkish airspace took place Saturday and the second was on Sunday.
Stoltenberg referenced the "substantial buildup of Russian forces in Syria," which he said includes "ground troops in connection with the air base they have."
Echoing U.S. complaints, the NATO official said, "I'm also concerned that Russia is not targeting ISIL (ISIS) but instead attacking the Syrian opposition and civilians."
On Tuesday, the British tabloid Mirror newspaper quoted sources saying Vladimir Putin's hardcore Spetsnaz unit and a covert para battalion were on the ground assisting the Syrian ground campaign against the rebels.
One military source told the newspaper Putin's marines "are there to guard the airbases they are using against Âsabotage by rebels."
"But Spetsnaz and air-assault troops are not there to provide security to static objects, they are extremely aggressive and highly trained," the source said.
"They are there to mop up after airstrikes, call in airstrikes, go on extremely covert missions against rebels and ultimately wipe them out."
Last week, WND reported Russia's first airstrikes in Syria were followed immediately by a series of major Syrian army ground operations targeting rebel positions, including in some areas not controlled by ISIS.
Two Lebanese sources told Reuters that hundreds of Iranian troops have arrived in Syria to fight alongside Hezbollah and Syrian forces backed by Russian airstrikes.
"The (Russian) air strikes will in the near future be accompanied by ground advances by the Syrian army and its allies," one of the sources said, according to Reuters.
"It is possible that the coming land operations will be focused in the Idlib and Hama countryside," added the source, described as being familiar with the military and political developments.
Russia has insisted it only targeted ISIS positions. Russian Foreign Minister Sergey Lavrov told reporters on the sidelines of the United Nations General Assembly that the Russian air forces are working in conjunction with the Syria military to "exclusively" target ISIS.
"Rumors that the targets of these strikes were not [ISIS] positions were groundless," Lavrov stated.
Prophecy at work--Putin in the Middle East - Bill Wilson - www.dailyjot.com
The US "president" has created a mess in the Middle East. He supported an overthrow of stable governments (although not necessarily good governments) through the Arab Spring revolts in partnership with the Muslim Brotherhood and al Qaeda. He targeted Syria, a vassal state of Iran, also for overthrow. In his efforts to rid Syria of dictator Bashar Assad, the US supported not only al Qaeda, al Nursa and a handful of other terrorists groups, but also the Islamic State. The IS is brutally advancing throughout the Middle East, torturing, beheading, crucifying, raping and pillaging anyone who does not agree with them. Then the "president" supports Iran offering it billions of dollars and a way to expand its nuclear program.
Now Russia's Vladimir Putin is stepping in as a force to be reckoned with. The power base is shifting in the Middle East and this has significant prophetic implications. Putin, in support of allies Iran and Syria, has determined to eliminate IS. This is a wild card for the US "president," who has given lip service to eradicating the world from the IS, but has in reality supported it as a balance against Iran. With Putin stepping in, the US "president's" plan of Muslim Brotherhood unification of a worldwide caliphate is now in jeopardy. Strange enough is the "president's" support of Iran at the same time. But overall, it seems that the "president" is taking great steps to see an overall unification of Islam in the Middle East.
This does not seem possible with Putin stepping in to eradicate IS and to bolster Iran's puppet, Syria. Indeed, the Syria-Iran supported Hezbollah and other terrorist groups will be bolstered by Putin's actions. This places Hezbollah on the mountain tops of the Golan Heights, within clear sight of Israel. And it gives Hezbollah the backing of Russian bases that are being anchored in Syria. Let us not be deceived, however. Islam's goal is to eliminate Israel from the face of the world map. Islam is very strategic and Russia long has been an ally. While it appears that Putin and the US "president" are at odds over their policies, the end result may well align with both prophecy and Islam's quest to eradicate Israel.
So where is the prophecy in all this? I do not believe it is found in Ezekiel 38. It may be the very start of how Ezekiel 38 will someday play out, but it is not this as yet. Jesus, however, in laying out exactly what would happen in the end times warned us in Matthew 24:4, "Take heed that no man deceive you." There is a lot of deception in the current Middle East events. Jesus went on to say, "And you shall hear of wars and rumors of wars: see that you be not troubled: for all these things must come to pass, but the end is not yet. For nation shall rise against nation, and kingdom against kingdom: and there shall be famines, and pestilences, and earthquakes, in divers places." We are seeing the impact of wars and more is to come.
With Russia's Dep. Army Chief due in Israel, Moscow posts 64 S-300 ship-to-air missiles off Syria, N. Israel - http://www.debka.com/article/24929/With-Russia's-Dep-Army-Chief-due-in-Israel-Moscow-posts-64-S-300-ship-to-air-missiles-off-Syria-N-Israel
Russia's deputy chief of staff, Gen. Nikolay Bogdanovsky, accompanied by a large military delegation, arrives in Israel for a two-day visit on Tuesday, Oct. 6, to discuss increased coordination between the two militaries. However, Moscow seems to be sending Jerusalem an altogether different message: Friday, Oct. 2, the Russian Defense Ministry announced the surprise deployment of Navy cruiser, the Moskva, armed with 64 advanced anti-aircraft missiles S-300 ship-to-air missiles opposite the Syrian coastal town of Latakia.
debkafile's military sources point out that Russia, without saying so publicly, has thus created an effective no-fly zone over most of Syria, most of northern Israel, including the Golan, as well as southern Turkey, for US aircraft based there for air strikes in Syria; Cyprus, the site of British air force bases; and Jordan.
Since 2012, The Obama administration has been discussing the possibility of establishing no-fly zones in northern and southern Syria on a number of occasions, but has shelved the plan whenever a decision was imminent. Now, with one move, Moscow has imposed a no-fly zone over Syria.
The presence of the wide-ranging S-300s means that the Turkish, British, Israeli and Jordanian air forces will need to coordinate their aerial operations in Syrian or Lebanese airspace with Russia, or face the risk of their planes being shot down.
In the view of debkafile's military sources, the only aircraft capable of evading those advanced missiles are stealth planes. Neither the Israeli, British, Jordanian or Turkish air forces, nor the US squadron in Turkey consisting of F-16 fighters, have such aircraft at their disposal.
The S-300 has a range of 150 kilometers and can shoot down any type of missile, including cruise missiles, as well as planes.
If US President Obama truly wanted to deal effectively with Moscow's military moves in Syria, besides saying that Russia is bound to fail, he would have ordered the deployment of US stealth fighters to Turkey and Israel. However, may have been held back from this step by fear of antagonizing Iran, which has so far delayed sealing the nuclear agreement with the world powers by putting it to vote in parliament.
The presence of Moskva off the shores of Syria and close to northern Israel creates a new situation that will very likely be discussed in the talks that start Tuesday in Tel Aviv between Russia's deputy chief of staff and his Israeli counterpart, IDF Gen. Yair Golan.
Although Russian President Vladimir Putin promised Israeli Prime Minister Binyamin Netanyahu during their summit in Moscow on September 21 not to allow S-300 missiles reach the hands of the Syrian military, he made no promises about positioning them on a Russian warship in the Mediterranean facing Syria and northern Israel. .
Our military sources point out that Russian air strikes have not been confined to any single area so far, but the injection of S-300s into the war arena widens the Russian air force's options.
In an interview with CNN on October 4, Prime Minister Netanyahu described how the Russian operation in Syria had affected relations with Moscow. "We don't want to go back to the days when, you know, Russia and Israel were in an adversarial position," he said. "I think we've changed the relationship. And it's, on the whole, good." He added that Israel's close relations with the US were in a completely different and special category.
When asked whether he thought Russia's intervention would cause instability in the region, he seemed to avoid giving a detailed response, only saying, "I don't know. I think time will tell".
However, on the topic of the transfer of advanced weaponry to Hezbollah, the prime minister was very clear. "If anybody wants to use Syrian territory to transfer nuclear weapons to Hezbollah, we'll take action," he said.
It marked the first time for an Israeli prime minister to speak publicly on the possibility that the terrorist organization could acquire atomic weapons.
