| Reining in the NSA
A little more than a year after former National Security Agency contractor Edward Snowden revealed that the federal government was collecting and storing the telephone records of millions of Americans, Congress is poised to end the program and provide protection for personal information. Senate Judiciary Committee Chairman Sen. Patrick Leahy (D-VT.) is proposing a bill that would impose stricter limits on the search terms used to obtain not only phone data but other records as well.

| Scots Confident of EU Membership
With one month to go until Scotland's referendum on independence from the UK, polls indicate the Yes side is gaining ground. A recent poll found that 64 percent of Scots expect an independent Scotland to be re-admitted to the EU. The scottish referendum on whether to dissolve the 307-year old union will be a key moment for other would-be breakaway regions in the EU.

| US Exerting Pressure on ICC
The US and other western powers have exerted pressure on the International Criminal Court at The Hague to prevent a war crimes probe of Israel's operation in the Gaza Strip. During Operation Protective Edge, the Palestinian Authority threatened to request that court look into allegations that the civilian deaths in Gaza constitute a war crime. The issue was among the matters discussed at cease-fire talks in Cairo.

| Pope Francis: Stop Islamic State
Pope Francis said that the international community would be justified in trying to stop religious fundamentalists in the Middle East. The pontiff laid out his case for a 'just war' in Iraq. The Pope said, "In these cases, where there is an unjust aggression I can only say that it is legitimate to stop the unjust aggressor." He said the United Nations was the...

| Red Heifer Update
The red heifer that was born to friends of the Temple Institute has become disqualified. She developed a change of pigmentation in a patch of skin, as well as the appearance of white hairs in the affected area. Changes of this nature are not uncommon in the bovine world as a heifer matures. The Temple Institute will continue its search for a kosher red heifer.
