Paul's Letter to the Americans? - Gary Stearman -
Paul's letter to the Romans might well be called, "Paul's letter to the Americans." As it did in ancient Rome, violent anti-Christian paganism is exploding in our blessed land!
His letter is said to have been written about A.D. 57, toward the end of his third missionary journey. The city of Rome was a hodgepodge of international trade, including slaves, luxury items, dry goods, fabrics, household products, construction materials and various technical services from throughout the empire. Paul entered that vortex of power around the time of Nero, whose reign of terror extended from A.D. 54 to 68. For Christians, these fourteen years became increasingly horrific. Dozens of histories document the records of their harassment and torture. Rome's churning population numbered in the millions, and was the very image of Gentile world power.
As he addressed Christians among this wide-ranging conglomeration of workers, merchants, traders and pagan slave owners, Paul wrote what has been called the most profound book ever given to mankind on the plan of salvation. Some have called it, "The Gospel According to Paul." It circulated throughout the Empire, changing the lives of countless multitudes.
He wrote it from Corinth, where he was under threat of arrest, and was later forced to take a circuitous route back to Jerusalem with donations for the Greek churches. During this period, and in the decades that followed, Christians were subjected to increasing harassment, torture and death. In those days, it was dangerous to be a Christian!
Even under that threat, Paul wrote, "So, as much as in me is, I am ready to preach the gospel to you that are at Rome also" (Rom. 1:15).
And then, he defines the problem that is set before him, writing his famous seven-step description of man's regression into sin: "21 Because that, 1 when they knew God, 2 they glorified him not as God, 3 neither were thankful; but 4 became vain in their imaginations, and 5 their foolish heart was darkened. 22:6 Professing themselves to be wise, they became fools, 23 And 7 changed the glory of the uncorruptible God into an image made like to corruptible man, and to birds, and fourfooted beasts, and creeping things" (Rom. 1:21-23).
Throughout history, this clear pattern has repeated itself over and over again. The Gospel goes forth, a society is blessed by God, and then it falls away from belief, worshipping humanity and the natural world, which it sees as self-creating.
There have always been places on the Earth where it's dangerous to be a Christian. Today, these places are expanding exponentially! We shouldn't be surprised. As Paul wrote to Timothy, "This know also, that in the last days, perilous times shall come" (II Tim. 3:1).
As we observe with increasing frequency, such times are upon us, here and now. Increasingly, we are faced with the same challenge that loomed before Paul and the other Apostles. Before us, lies the same resistance that faced early Christianity. Paganism and secular philosophy are the gods of the present world. Believers are being spitefully excluded from public life at an astonishing rate! No lo
nger are we respected, or protected, not even in the United States of America!
Like the early church, we have a divine calling. Will we prove as strong and faithful in presenting the Gospel as those who went before us?
