DAILY DEVOTIONALS: 3.20.21

What the Enemy Intends for Evil, God Will Use for Good By Debbie McDaniel “As for you, you meant evil against me, but God meant it for good, to bring it about that many people should be kept alive, as they are today.” Genesis 50:20 What The Enemy Meant for Evil At just 16 yrs. of age, St. Patrick was kidnapped by pirates and taken from his British homeland to Ireland where he was sold into slavery. He worked in the fields as a shepherd for 6 years under terribly harsh conditions, until God miraculously provideda way of escape for him to flee. As difficult as that time must have been, it was during those lonely years of enslavement, where he faced hunger, freezing temperatures, and pain, that he met with God, and found deep closeness in His Presence through prayerand meditation. Who would have ever dreamed of how God would turn around this tragedy for good? After months back at home, recuperating and seeking direction for his future plans, St. Patrick felt strongly led to go back to Ireland. He knew God had brought him there for a purpose and he was burdened to share Christ with a lost nation. History tells us that thousands were saved. Revival broke out among this pagan people, lives were changed, as many came to know Christ as Lord and Savior. Though God is not the author of evil in our world, and though often He does choose to shelter and protect us from the evil attacks of the enemy on our lives, sometimes…He takes us straight through dark seasons. And it’s never to leave us there for no purpose. He will always have a purpose and hope through what we may experience, however difficult it may be. He will always be faithful to bring greater good. ------------------------------------------------------------------ Acquiring Wisdom Proverbs 4:20-27 The most obvious source of godly wisdom is the Bible. You cannot think of a question or life circumstance about which God’s Word is silent. His principles for right character, conduct, and conversation apply to every situation and decision confronting human beings. We’re all able to recall times when we didn’t respond wisely. Those incidents can be traced back to one of two possibilities—either we didn’t know a certain biblical principle or we knew the principle that applied but chose to ignore or violate it. To ensurethat we’ are familiar with God’s standards and the importance of following them, we’ve got to dig into His Word. -------------------------------------------------------------------- NoFear in the Days of Evil “Wherefore should I fear in the days of evil, when the iniquity of my heels shall compass me about?” (Psalm49:5) This enigmatic question should be a real concern to elderly unbelievers—or of unbelievers of any age, for that matter. The “days of evil” seem specifically to refer to old age, as in Ecclesiastes 12:1, which exhorted young people to “remember now thy Creator in the days of thy youth, while the evil days come not, nor the years draw nigh, when thou shalt say, I have no pleasure in them.” Those who have not “remembered their Creator” while young may one day come to realize that the iniquities that had been accumulating against their record day by day through a long lifetime had actually involved the venom of that old Serpent, which God longago had warned would bruise the heels of the children of Mother Eve (see Genesis 3:15). Their sins, which will eventually become so numerous as to “compass them about,” might even destroy them both now and eternally. After all, the devil will have “the power of death” (Hebrews2:14) until that day when the true seed of the woman the Lord Jesus Christ (even though His own “heel” has been viciously “bruised” by Satan when the sins of the whole world were placed upon Him) will “crush the head” of that wicked one forever. But because of Christ’s great victory over Satan—when He both died for our sins and then defeated death by His resurrection—we need no longer fear death, even when the evil days draw nigh. Though it is far better to accept His gift of salvation from sin and death while we are young, it is never too late as long as we live. So, “wherefore should I fear in the days of evil?” “We have known and believed the love that God hath to us. God is love;and...perfect love casteth out fear” (1John 4:16, 18). HMM ---------------------------------------------------------------------- Trapped in the Darkness by Fred Alberti "…to open their eyes and turn them from darkness to light, and from the power of Satan to God, so that they may receive forgiveness of sins and a place among those who are sanctified by faith in me." Acts26:18 As I was walking through my nature trail this week I, as I normally do, asked the Lord what I should write this week. As I passed through the chapel area of the trail the sun flashed through the leaves and caught my attention. Light. I had entered the darknessof the woods but that light caught my attention. I "filed" it away and continued my travels through the trail. Later, I was reading through various news stories of earthquake survivors in China when one particular story jumped out at me and brought back to my mind my earlier encounter with the rising sun. The story was of a middle-aged man named Mr. Shen whose quickthinking to take cover in a doorway saved him from the fate experienced by many of his co-workers. When interviewed, Mr. Shen recalled shouting to a co-worker to join him in the doorway when the room suddenly collapsed. The next thing he remembered was the sudden darkness that enveloped him. What struck me in his interview was his statement, "Oh, the darkness, oh, the darkness all over. I didn't know when it was going to end." There are people that we walk past every day that, without knowing it, are spiritually in the same condition as Mr. Shen; trapped in darkness under the weight of sin. ------------------------------------------------------------------- Expressions of Praise Psalms 34:1-3 Glorifying the Lord is not limited to worshipping in church. In fact, praise ought to permeate the believer’s life. One obvious way that we praise the Lord is with our voice. We can either speak or sing our worship. Psalm writers put adoration into words and set their love to music. True worship also flows from the mouths of believers who are focused upon God’s attributes. They desire to honor Him because of who He is, what He has done, and what He has promised for the future. ---------------------------------------------------------------------- How to Be Spiritually Strong - by Greg Laurie www.harvest.org I have hidden your word in my heart, that I might not sin against you. Psalm 119:11 https://harvest.org/resources/devotion/how-to-be-spiritually-strong/- Listen Years ago my wife, Cathe, and I were on a flight home when the pilot made an announcement about 45 minutes from the airport. He said that we would have to make an emergencylanding, and the flight attendants would be going over the safety procedures with us once again. Now, when the flight attendants went through those procedures the first time, I was reading a magazine and didnt pay that much attention. But things had changed. And youdbetter believe that I listened to the flight attendants the second time. What made the difference? My life depended on it. (And by the way, we landed safely.) When we hear the Word of God, we need to listen as though our lives depend on it because they doour spiritual lives do. Think of it this way. Were in a spiritual battle, and we fight a spiritual battle with spiritual weapons. Ephesians 6:17 tells us, Put on salvation as your helmet, andtake the sword of the Spirit, which is the word of God (NLT). Memorize and use the Word of God. Soon after the famous evangelist Billy Sunday became a Christian, he went to an older minister and asked him for some advice on how to grow spiritually. The man replied, If you will spend fifteen minutes a day letting God talk to you through the Bible, and fifteen minutes talking to God in prayer, and fifteen minutes talkingto someone about God, they will never write backslider after your name. How does God speak to us? He speaks to us primarily through the Word of God, the Bible. A successful Christian will be a Bible-studying Christian, and a failing Christianwill be someone who doesnt open the Word of God. You determine what kind of Christian you will be. ------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------ Whatthe Creator Requires And now, Israel, what doth the LORD thy God require of thee, but to fear the LORD thy God, to walk in allhis ways, and to love him, and to serve the LORD thy God with all thy heart and with all thy soul? (Deuteronomy10:12) In the final weeks before his death, Moses gathered the people of Israel together for a final look back at Gods miraculous provision for the nation and a restatement of the law. He repeated the Ten Commandments and reminded them of their supernatural origin(chapter 5). He charged them to remember the law and to pass it on to their children, for God Himself had entrusted it to them (chapter 6). He insisted that they utterly destroy the enemies of God in the land, for their holy and special status as the peopleof God would be in jeopardy if they didnt (chapter 7). The longest section of the speech consisted of a command to remember their unique history: how God had supernaturally intervened for them on so many occasions (8:1-10:11). Finally, Moses brought them to a time of commitment, charging them in our text to fear, obey, love, and serve the LORD thy God with all thy heart and with all thy soul. Even the commandments were for their good (v. 13); they were not merely petty or malicious. In fact, throughout the lengthy lecture, Moses had several times adjured the people to love their Lord with their entire being (see 6:5; 7:9; 10:20; 11:1, 13, 22). And why not? Behold, the heaven and the heaven of heavens is the LORDs thy God, the earth also, with all that therein is (10:14). The God who placed His sovereign mark on Israel (v. 15) deserved their total devotion, obedience, and service. Does not the Creator God, who has done so much more for us than He had done even for Israel, deserve our total devotion, obedience, and service? JDM ------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------ Renewal in the Desert By Katherine Britton "Therefore I am now going to allure her [Israel]; I will lead her into the desert and speak tenderly to her." - Hosea 2:14 The prophet Hosea certainly had one of the least enviable jobs ever. God commanded him to take a wife who both God and Hosea knew would be unfaithful, so Hosea married Gomer, a prostitute. They had several children together, but at length she went back toher old ways. She left Hosea, went back to her lovers, and ended up betrayed into the slave market. Hosea then did the unthinkable. He bought her back. "The LORD said to me, Go, show your love to your wife again, though she is loved by another and is an adulteress' So I bought her for fifteen shekels of silver and about a homer and a lethek of barley. Then I told her, "You are to live withme many days; you must not be a prostitute or be intimate with any man, and I will live with you." (Hosea3:1-3) In a very real sense, Hosea redeemed his wayward bride. Instead of leaving her to the natural consequences, he brought her back into the covenant of marriage. From the very beginning, the Lord makes it clear to Hosea that the pain of betrayal, ingratitude, and inconstant nature of Gomer was nothing less than God himself experienced at the hands of his bride, the people of Israel. Idolatry far exceeded faithfulnessto the covenant, and the nation became increasingly entangled with foreign kingdoms, against God's direct commandment. They were the wayward bride, and their fate would be no less than Gomer's. Hosea assured every Israelite that the natural consequences oftheir action - slavery and destitution - were coming. And yet the Lord did not abandon them. Instead, when everything they had trusted was stripped away, he pursued them. God said, -------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------- The HolySpirit: An Absolute Luke24:36-49 Salvationoccurs when we trust Jesus as our Savior--He forgives us, transforms us, and sees us as righteous. In that moment, we are redeemed, and though we continue to struggle with sin, it is a defeated foe. Then as time goes on, our service, gifts, and love for Himshould naturally become greater. Unfortunately, a lot of Christians sit in church week after week, going through the motions yet lacking passion and failing to grow. How is such a thing possible? Tragically, many believers are unaware of the essential ministry of God's Spirit. ---------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------- God'sTear Bottle Thou tellest my wanderings: put thou my tears into thy bottle: are they not in thy book? (Psalm56:8) This is a remarkable insight into the tender heart of our heavenly Father. He has a tear bottlein fact, perhaps a tear bottle for each of His wandering children. Ancient tear bottles (or wineskins) have actually been excavated by archaeologists in Israel. These vessels were used to catch and preserve the owners tears during times of grief or extreme pressure. This psalm was actually written by David when he was beingpursued by Saul on one side and surrounded by Philistines in the city of Goliath on the other. David apparently not only had his own tear bottle but also believed that God somehow was also storing up Davids personal tears in His own heavenly bottle of tears. There is a touching story in the earthly ministry of Jesus that provides another example: Behold, a woman in the city, which was a sinner, when she knew that Jesus sat at meat in the Pharisees house, brought an alabaster box of ointment, And stood at hisfeet behind him weeping, and began to wash his feet with tears,...and anointed them with the ointment (Luke7:37-38). The ointment was obviously not the same as the tears but followed the washing by tears. Some scholars think these tears came from her bottle, which was emptied on His feet and used to wash them. Others think that those tear bottles that have been found actuallycontained the collected tears of mourners at a burial site. In any case, God does know all our wanderings and sorrows and all our tears, and stores them up somewhere. Perhaps it is also a metaphor for His book of remembrance, which is being written before him for them that feared the Lord, and that thought upon hisname (Malachi3:16). HMM ---------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------- Defenseof the Gospel Even as it is meet for me to think this of you all, because I have you in my heart; inasmuch as both inmy bonds, and in the defence and confirmation of the gospel, ye all are partakers of my grace. (Philippians1:7) Writing from prison in Rome some 10 years after he helped found the church in Philippi, Paul still felt such a bond with those believers that he insisted they partake with him in his defence and confirmation of the gospel ministry. The key words here are defense (Greek apologia) and confirmation (Greek bebaiosis). Both words are not common in the New Testament text. Together, they describe a mission attitude that should anchor our approach to ministry. Apologia, in its various forms, is most often translated answer. Peter used this term in a passage that urged Christians to be ready always to give an answer [as in, an answer that is logically sufficient] to every man that asketh you a reason ofthe hope that is in you (1Peter 3:15). Paul used apologia twice to the Philippian church; both times stressed the defence of the gospel (Philippians1:17). Bebaiosis and its associated terms convey the meaning of firmness or having been established. Paul encouraged the Colossian church to be rooted and built up in [Christ], and stablished in the faith (Colossians2:7). Peter tells us to make [our] calling and election sure [same word, bebaiosis] (2Peter 1:10). Thus, our witness and declaration of the power of God unto salvation (Romans1:16) must be with logic (apologia) to defend the precious truth and with an eye to establish (bebaiosis) that truth in the mind and heart of those newly converted. The gospel tells who Christ is (the Creator, the incarnate Word, and coming King) as well as what He did on Calvary. HMM III -------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------- A Season for Everything by Ryan Duncan He has made everything beautiful in its time. He has also set eternity in the hearts of men; yet they cannot fathom what God has done from beginning to end. Ecclesiastes 3:11 I dont like winter. At the beginning it can be fun: warm sweaters, fresh snow, Christmas is usually on the horizon, but once January hits, winter can be absolutely brutal. Everything is so cold and dark and bleak. You start counting down the days to springin your head, and scanning the ground for any sign of green. Despite everything though, winter does have a purpose. The changing temperatures help prepare the ground for seeds, and clear away dead vegetation to make way for the new growth. Without each season playing its part, its likely the environment would collapse. As Christians, its tempting to think that if weaccept Christ as our savior and follow his commands, well never endure hardship. But life, like nature, moves in seasons. Just look at what the Bible has to say, There is a time for everything, and a season for every activity under heaven: a time to be born and a time to die, a time to plant and a time to uproot, a time to kill and a time to heal, a time to tear down and a time to build, a time to weep and atime to laugh, a time to mourn and a time to dance, a time to scatter stones and a time to gather them, a time to embrace and a time to refrain, a time to search and a time to give up, a time to keep and a time to throw away, a time to tear and a time to mend,a time to be silent and a time to speak, a time to love and a time to hate, a time for war and a time for peace. Ecclesiastes 3:1-8 We live in a sinful world, and because of that, we often have to endure painful seasons in life, but that does not mean our pain is meaningless. Many times throughout the Bible, God took an evil thing and used it for good, and He still does this today. Hecan take a season of suffering and use it to open our eyes to the suffering of others. He can use a season of death and remind us of the beauty in life. He can take a season of sorrow, and draw us closer to Him as He encourages us, and reminds us all seasonssoon come to an end. ------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------- Controlling Our Appetites 1Corinthians 9:24-27 What words would you use to describe our society? Materialistic, sensual, impatient, indulgent, undisciplined--these are just a few. We're also a "have it now" culture. Satan specializes in presenting us with opportunities for instant gratificationwhile promising us that indulging our appetites will bring us the satisfaction we seek. Human appetites, in themselves, are not sinful. In fact, they're God-given. However, because of our fleshly weaknesses, they need to be controlled. When our appetites rule us, we're in trouble. Paul likened the Christian life to that of athletes who areso focused on winning the race that they exercise self-control in every area of their lives. ----------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------- The Power of Trusting the Lord with All Your Heart By Debbie McDaniel Trust in the Lord with all your heart, and do not lean on your own understanding. In all your ways acknowledge Him, and He will make your paths straight. Proverbs 3:5-6 If the future feels uncertain right now, and worry keeps occupying too much room in your heart, in your mind, remember this: God is already in all of our tomorrows. He knows our way, and He has a plan. And we can be assured it's always the best one for us. God never asks us to figure it all out on our own. He just asks us to trust Him, to recognize His leadership and Sovereignty in our lives. And He promises to make our pathways straight. - "Trust (be confident in, be bold, be secure) - in the Lord with all your heart (seat of emotions, inclinations, mind, soul), - and do not lean (trust, support) - on your own understanding (discernment). - In all your ways acknowledge Him (know, recognize), - and He will make your paths straight (pleasing, right, smooth)." Proverbs 3:5-6 ---------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------- Always the Same - by Greg Laurie www.harvest.org All Scripture is inspired by God and is useful to teach us what is true and to make us realize what is wrong in our lives. It corrects us when we are wrong and teaches usto do what is right. 2 Timothy 3:16 https://harvest.org/resources/devotion/always-the-same/- Listen Every day, 66 percent of evangelical Christians are looking at Facebook, 39 percent are looking at YouTube, and 32 percent are opening their Bibles. In other words, a lot of Christians arent opening their Bibles today. Instead, theyre looking at social media. Thats a problem. I remember the first time I started to read the Bible. I couldnt believe that I had finally found the users manual of life. I couldnt believe how the words were so relevantto what I was facing as a 17-year-old kid. In fact, Ive found that the Word of God is relevant for every phase of my life, and you will find the same. The Bible is the most amazing book ever written. Its literally Gods message to us. Technically speaking, it isnt one book. Its actually 66 books written over a 1,500-yearspan by 40 writers from every walk of life: kings, peasants, philosophers, fishermen, poets, statesmen, and scholars. Yet all of them wrote about one thing: Gods redemption of humanity. And God inspired every one of these individuals who wrote down the Scriptures. The Bible says, Aboveall, you must realize that no prophecy in Scripture ever came from the prophets own understanding, or from human initiative. No, those prophets were moved by the Holy Spirit, and they spoke from God (2 Peter 1:2021 NLT). So many things come and go, from trends to musical styles. But the Word of God is always the same, and Jesus Christ is always the same, yesterday, today, and forever. Its amazing to me that even though a newspaper is outdated in a day or so, Gods Word is always fresh and relevant to what were facing. It never goes out of style. The Word of God is perfect and completely trustworthy. So we need to open it and hear what it has to say. ---------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------- If You Want to Be Transformed . . . - by Greg Laurie www.harvest.org The instructions of the LORD are perfect, reviving the soul. The decrees of the LORD are trustworthy, making wise the simple. Psalm 19:7 https://harvest.org/resources/devotion/if-you-want-to-be-transformed/- Listen If you dont want God to transform your life, then dont read the Bible. David wrote, The instructions of the Lord are perfect, reviving the soul. The decrees of the Lord are trustworthy, making wise the simple (Psalm 19:7 NLT). When you read Gods Word, it revives you. It restores you. And it transforms you. Now, if you have it all worked out, then I guess you dont need the Bible. But of course, youre also delusional, because all of us need the Word of God. The Bible is theusers manual that weve been looking for. Someone has pointed out that the word Bible is an acronym for basic instructions before leaving Earth. The Bible is for people who have a sense of desperation about where they are in life. Its for people who dont know the purpose of life and want to know what that purposeshould be. The Bible is for people who arent really sure where they came from, and theyre not really sure where theyre going. In addition, the Bible is for people who want to change. Its is for people who wish they could control their passions, who dont want to be mere victims of their circumstances, and who wish there wasnt so much pain in life. The Bible is for people who want better relationships with others. Yet some people say things like this: Well, I tried the whole Christianity thing, and it didnt work for me. If it didnt work for them, then that isnt on Jesus; thatson them. Jesus Christ will change any person who comes to Him. If you want to be a growing Christian, then you need to spend time in Gods Word because it will transforms you. So read, love, study, and memorize the Word of God. ------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------- The Dreamer Who Changed the World - byGreg Laurie www.harvest.org The way of the righteous is like the first gleam of dawn, which shines ever brighter until the full light of day. Proverbs 4:18 https://harvest.org/resources/devotion/the-dreamer-who-changed-the-world/- Listen We live in a culture thats in search of real heroes. In fact, Im not sure whether we know what a hero is anymore. We use the term very loosely. I think we live in a culturethat has a lot of celebrities but very few heroes. As historian Daniel J. Boorstin pointed out, Celebrities are people who make news, but heroes are people who make history. Time makes heroes but dissolves celebrities. That is certainly what we have before us in the life of Joseph. He was a true hero, and he changed his world. There are a lot of things we can learn from Joseph, includinghow to overcome adversity. In Josephs story, we discover how we can overcome envy, face adversity, resist sexual temptation, have faith in the promises of God, and forgive those who have horriblywronged us. Josephs life showed very little promise. As the 12th of 13 children, he was a bit on the pampered side and given to visions of grandeur. But God gave him dreams. In thebeginning, his dreams got him into trouble. In the end, however, other peoples dreams got him out of trouble. If Joseph were alive today, his life verse would be Romans 8:28: And we know that God causes everything to work together for the good of those who love God and are calledaccording to his purpose for them (NLT). If anyone could have had an excuse for turning out badly, it was Joseph. He lived in a family dominated by lying, deceit, immorality, manipulation, and even murder. He couldhave blamed his parents for all the problems of his life. Yet amazingly, Joseph turned out to be a very godly young man with a sterling character. And he changed the world because God changed his world first. --------------------------------------------------------------------- Dear Friend Who Is Battling Lies: Hold on to Truth By Debbie McDaniel "Come to me, all you who are weary and burdened, and I will give you rest. Matthew 11:28 Often, we can be our own worst enemy. We struggle with feelings of guilt and inadequacy, in parenting, in our marriages, in work, from the past to our present. We instant replay all of our mistakes in our hearts, in our minds. We feel like were not enough, we cant get it all done. And the world can be really great at reminding us most dayswhere we fall short. The enemy whispers his lies of defeat. Hes done it since the beginning of time. Hes a manipulator and deceiver. Hell attack when were already down. He watches for our every weakness. Comparison seeps in. Feelings of being overwhelmed. We sink right into that downward spiral of defeat and despair. And, you may know the story well. I do too. But we dont have to stay stuck there. Dear friends in Christ, who work so hard, serve faithfully, love well, and make endless sacrifices for those you care about... For those who don't always feel like you get it right, who struggle with guilt, insecurity, or deep feelings of failure... God sees you. He knows the burdens you carry. He's aware of how you've tried so hard to be strong for those you love.He understands the pain you've faced and even without uttering a word, He knows. He gets it, and you, and me too. In our weakness, He is strong. -------------------------------------------------------------------- Seeking Guidance Psalms25:4-5 When you're facing a decision, whether big or small, it is important to wait upon God for His direction and timing. And though it may sound paradoxical, there are three ways that we can take an active role in the process while we wait. First, we should examine our heart, asking the Holy Spirit to expose any wrongs. If He brings something to light, it is important to take care of that sin immediately--by confessing, repenting, and doing whatever's needed to correct the situation. At times we push this task aside because the impendingdecision seems like our main concern. Yet we cannot hear from God or receive His full blessing until we deal with transgression. ------------------------------------------------------------------- BeSure But if ye will not do so, behold, ye have sinned against the LORD: and be sure your sin will find you out. (Numbers32:23) Most things in this life are uncertain; nevertheless, there are some things about which we can be absolutely sure. Just as God warned Adam that if he disobeyed His Word, he would surely die (Genesis2:17), so He warns us that we can be sure our sins will ultimately be exposed. The foundation of God standeth sure (2Timothy 2:19). On the other side of the coin, we can also be sure of Gods mercy and faithfulness, and we can be sure of the truth of His Word. We have also a more sure word of prophecy; whereunto ye do well that ye take heed, as unto a light that shineth in a dark place (2Peter 1:19). We also can be sure of His promised salvation. Which hope we have as an anchor of the soul, both sure and stedfast (Hebrews6:19). Thus, we can, through faith and patience, show the same diligence to the full assurance of hope unto the end (Hebrews6:11). Finally, we can be sure that our Lord Jesus, who came once to die for our sins, will come back again to complete His work of redemption and reconciliation. The very last promise of the Bible consists of His gracious words: Surely I come quickly (Revelation22:20). However, each of us must first make sure that we believe His sure Word and have appropriated this sure hope. Wherefore the rather, brethren, give diligence to make your calling and election sure: for if ye do these things, ye shall never fall: For so an entranceshall be ministered unto you abundantly into the everlasting kingdom of our Lord and Saviour Jesus Christ (2Peter 1:10-11). We can be sure that our sins must be judged, but we also can be sure of His forgiveness if we believe His sure promises and receive His sure salvation.
