One quiet and rainy Sunday afternoon, I decided to take a nap to try to clear a headache that had plagued me over the last day or so. This was one or two years before the events that we've come to know as 9-11 and I was still involved in the New Age. As soon as I fell asleep, a short dream overwhelmed me.
I found myself imprisoned in a small, dark enclosure and I was looking outside. There were two women clad all in black pacing back and forth like you see in a Space Invaders game. They were staring at me with a frightening malevolence. Suddenly the scene changed: I watched a large horde of men brandishing scimitars slaughtering a crowd of defenseless people. And I could hear the screams!
The dream woke me in fright and (I'm embarrassed to admit) in tears. The women in my dream were wearing hijabs and the horde was Islamic. At the time, however, Islamic extremism was way off my personal radar screen.
To this day I haven't a clue what prompted the dream. I'm sure Freud or Jung would have offered interesting analyses based on my psyche and personal life. Why dream about Islamic marauders? Why not something else?
When the 9-11 attacks on the Twin Towers occurred, I remembered the vivid nightmare. It helped provide an impetus for me to find out what was going on. Why would Muslims want to kill so many Americans? By 9-11, I was well on my way to kissing the New Age goodbye and waking up to the Real World.
Many are still caught up in the hope that Islam has been hijacked by a bunch of murderous extremists who misinterpret the Qur'an. Even the president of the United States recently insisted that:
"ISIL speaks for no religion. Their victims are overwhelmingly Muslim, and no faith teaches people to massacre innocents. No just God would stand for what they did yesterday and what they do every single day."
Mr. Obama is dreaming, and he wants to share it.
He ignores the reality that many members of the Islamic State come from western nations and were recruited in suburban Mosques by Imams teaching directly from the Qur'an. When western leaders, like Obama and Cameron, attempt to sanitize Islam, they are either willfully ignorant or in denial.
If it wasn't so tragic, it would be funny. I'm reminded of Monty Python's Dead Parrot spoof. In that skit a disgruntled man returns an obviously dead parrot back to the store where he bought it from. The clerk comes up with all sorts of absurd diversions to prove that the parrot is alive. Finally the exasperated parrot owner loses his patience:
'E's not pinin'! 'E's passed on! This parrot is no more! He has ceased to be! 'E's expired and gone to meet 'is maker! 'E's a stiff! Bereft of life, 'e rests in peace! If you hadn't nailed 'im to the perch 'e'd be pushing up the daisies! 'Is metabolic processes are now 'istory! 'E's off the twig! 'E's kicked the bucket, 'e's shuffled off 'is mortal coil, run down the curtain and joined the bleedin' choir invisible!! This is an ex-parrot!!
I feel the same frustration. Islam is not the religion of tolerance and peace that Mr. Obama (and others) habitually affirms. Nor can a nation like Iran ever be an ally. Saying something often enough doesn't make it correct. It only consolidates the lie.
There are important differences between proponents of Islam and Christianity. Just one example is the fact that Christianity has diverse and detailed commentaries and Systematic Theologies on the Bible. The different views are openly and rigorously challenged (without fear of death) within Christian academia.
Christianity maintains a self-auditing process where the specified goal is scriptural integrity. While interpretations vary based on hermeneutics, it is important to note that a literal approach to Scripture never condones the spread of Christianity through violent means.
But where are all the Qur'anic Systematic Theologies taking the radical Imams to task over the misinterpretations of the Qur'an? How is it that only two of fourteen Mosques in Denmark denounce the Islamic State?
Al Fadi, an ex Muslim scholar who converted to Christianity, assures us that it is the moderates who do not strictly follow the Qur'an. A literal approach to the Qur'an condones the use of violence to spread Islam, and its founder used it effectively. You can listen to an audio interview HERE.
Even Down Under Australia is not exempt from home-grown Islamic extremism. In the latest incident several people were arrested for planning ISIS style beheadings on Australian soil. But instead of the local Muslim community protesting the violation of the Qur'anic verses by apostates, they cried foul and protested the police raids.
President Obama has finally allowed a military response to ISIS in Syria. I suspect he is a reluctant participant and that he was cajoled into it. I wonder how deep those drag marks leading out from the golf course are.
The fact that he's managed to garner support from a few Arab states won't exempt America from future Islamist repercussions. It is, however, expedient for these states to crush ISIS on their doorsteps.
That the Obama Administration at one point wanted to recruit Iran, demonstrates how out of touch it is. The Iranian Regime is inexorably tied to Assad; it wants to eradicate Israel; it hates America and it will use any advantage to progress its nuclear program. It's that simple.
Crushing ISIS in Syria and Iraq won't stop the terrorist march. There are more where they came from. The West must wake up from its stupefying slumber and identify the fertile breeding grounds of these terrorists in its own backyards.
Yet as the West responds, something will happen to our civil rights. Following the latest scare in Australia, Prime Minister Abbot declared:
"Regrettably, for some time to come, the delicate balance between freedom and security may have to shift."
"After all, the most basic freedom of all is the freedom to walk the streets unharmed and to sleep safe in our beds at night."
As my friend John astutely observed:
"That is how it begins, small steps in progression, all very reasonable steps, until all freedom is gone."
Are we paying attention?
