Morning Briefing: 9.12.14

Morning Briefing
For September 10, 2014

Republican Strategy May Prevent Landslide Election
"The only thing the 'prevent defense' does it prevent you from winning," quipped legendary NFL coach and broadcaster John Madden. Conservatives, therefore, should be terrified to read this week that the House Republican leadership's goal for September is "to play prevent defense," according to The Hill newspaper.

The Republican leadership's logic is tempting at first glance: Conservatives have reason to be cautiously optimistic about the 2014 elections. Unfortunately, this initial temptation does not stand up to stricter scrutiny. The reason Republicans are in a good position for this election is because they created a favorable contrast between themselves and the President in 2013, the election is too close at this point to coast, and Republicans need more than just a narrow victory to feel confident about their chances after 2016.  . . . please click here for the rest of the post ?

House GOP Setting the Stage for Massive Crony Capitalist Pay Backs in a Lame Duck
Essentially, just as the Democrats used retiring members of Congress to pass Obamacare since they no longer had to worry about being accountable to voters, Republicans are going to use their members on the other side of an election and no longer accountable to voters to increase federal spending, collaborate on amnesty, and prepare a grab bag of pork fill requests for K Street. . . . please click here for the rest of the post ?

Democrats in Michigan and Georgia Engage in Elaborate Scheme to Steal the Election
The House Minority Leader in the Georgia State House, Stacy Abrams, leads an organization now being investigated for fraudulent voter registration applications. WSB television in Atlanta broke the story last night. The group, New Georgia Project, is a subsidiary of Third Sector Development run by Stacy Abrams. Abrams also has direct ties to the Democrats' Senate candidate, Michelle Nunn, and their gubernatorial candidate, Jason Carter.

According to Georgia Secretary of State Brian Kemp, "Preliminary investigation has revealed significant illegal activities' including forged voter registration applications, forged signatures on releases, and applications with false or inaccurate information." . . . please click here for the rest of the post ?

The Tyranny of Small Things in Barack Obama's America
At first they came for the school vending machines. Then they came for school pizzas. Then kids across America decided they'd rather starve during the day than eat the crap Michelle Obama insists they need.

Liberals everywhere fretted that our children must be racists with no taste to reject fiats of Michelle Obama and the food police. The fat kids need to do it for their own good. But now, dear liberal foodies, the Obama food police are coming for you and your stinky cheese. . . . please click here for the rest of the post ?

Sen. Mark Udall (D, Colorado) Slapped with FEC Complaint
Senator Mark Udall, who yesterday had to apologize for his use of beheaded Americans as a political shield in his weekend debate with Republican opponent Rep. Cory Gardner, has been hit with an accusation of a campaign finance violation.

What Senator Mark Udall did, which was caught on camera by Revealing Politics, is a rather blatant violation of the Federal Elections Commission rule which bans the practice of federal candidates soliciting non-federal funds. While a named guest at a fundraising event for State Representative Crisanta Duran, Chairwoman of Colorado's powerful Joint Budget Committee and rumored contender for House Majority Leader, Udall took to the stage and promptly reminded the attendees to pull out their checkbooks to help send Rep. Duran back to the Colorado State Legislature. . . . please click here for the rest of the post ?

Obama and GOP agree to do nothing about ISIS
More information becomes available about Obama's strategy for dealing with ISIS. In essence, he wants money. . . . please click here for the rest of the post ?

Planned Parenthood puts revenue above women's health
During the 2012 presidential campaign the Democrats first employed the term "war on women" to attack the GOP. It was typical of the genitalia-centric politics the Democrats are so fond of but a convincing enough argument to the truly stupid to have an impact no only on the presidential race but several Senate and House races. And naturally, it sent the GOP establishment running like scalded dogs. One of the central figures in this was the rather bovine Sandra Fluke and her demand that you and I pay for her birth control pills. Now in any other time or place a demand by anyone that the taxpayers underwrite their sex life would be greeted with guffaws. Unfortunately, the time and place in which we live believes gender is a choice, restrooms are chosen by inclination, prisoners should get sex change operations at taxpayer expense, and, of course, taxpayers should pay for birth control. . . . please click here for the rest of the post ?

We'll Probably Get Fooled Again
The Washington Post and ABC have conducted a joint poll which asked respondents to rate Obama's presidency on whether it has been a "failure" or a "success." Note that this question is different conceptually from whether you approve or disapprove of the job someone is doing as President, which indicates current trajectory rather than overall performance. The results nonetheless were probably about what you'd expect . . . please click here for the rest of the post ?

Harry Reid Trolls Himself
Senate Democrats are mad that Republicans have moved forward to allow debate on an issue that they all ostensibly support. Their specific accusation is that Republicans are being "cynical" because they don't intend to actually vote for the amendment in question. . . . please click here for the rest of the post ?

Russia increases pressure on the Baltic States
As we noted last week, Barack Obama's speech in Tallinn, Estonia, declaring that NATO would defend the sovereignty of the Baltic States - Estonia, Latvia, and Lithuania - has not gone unnoticed in Moscow. Less than 48 hours after Obama gave his speech, Russian FSB agents crossed the Estonian frontier and abducted an Estonian counter-intelligence officer. The man is still being held incommunicado by the Russians and denied a visit from the Estonian consul, a rather blatant violation of the Vienna Convention to which Russia is a signatory.

Now they have followed it up with a demand that Lithuania undertake an investigation of Lithuanians who either refused to serve in the Soviet Army or who deserted from the Soviet Army . . . please click here for the rest of the post ?

Greta van Susteren: White House Pressured Fox News to Back Down on Benghazi
A lot of you probably caught Fox News' special this past weekend "13 Hours at Benghazi". As you might imagine, the White House is none too pleased with the special. Between it and the House Benghazi Committee's upcoming first public hearing on September 14, the Obama administration is clearly feeling the heat on the issue. On Friday, Greta van Susteren spoke on her show about how the White House tried to pressure her to get her colleague Jennifer Griffin to back down on Banghazi. Breitbart TV has the video of that particular (which is strangely not embeddable, for some reason).

Van Susteren did not stop there, though. Yesterday, she went on Hannity to elaborate upon what happened . . . please click here for the rest of the post ?

The GOP's Missing Electoral Link
Paul Ryan is a smart man, and probably represents the mainstream thinking of the Republican Party, though like every ambitious politician he likes to position himself as a critic of the crowd. But In a recent interview with Matthew Continetti Ryan started out well by complaining about the GOP consultant class. "The consultant class always says play it safe, choose a risk-averse strategy. I don't think we have the luxury of doing that." But then when called on to provide a non-risk averse strategy he comes up with this: "We need to treat people like adults by offering them alternatives." But what Republican consultant would tell his candidate not to offer alternative policies and ideas? There is none.

Every Republican thinks that offering a positive vision and new policies is the key to winning elections. Of course sometimes, as in the midterms this fall, the Democrats have screwed up so big that they are practically handing Republicans a victory. Just don't count on it for 2016. In fact, Ryan embraces the conventional GOP wisdom: "The only way we beat an Obama third term is to offer a spirited alternative and bring it up to a crescendo where we're really giving the country a very clear choice of policies and ideas."

Obama's to "start going on some offense" with ISIS
Wednesday Obama is supposed to address the nation on his plan for combating ISIS. The signs are not hopeful . . . please click here for the rest of the post ?

Sen. Mark Udall (D, Colorado) has no right to exploit murdered journalists
"In the course of an hour-long debate with Gardner in Grand Junction, Colo., [Mark] Udall said that "ISIL does not present an imminent threat to this nation." He cited his membership on the Senate Armed Services Committee and the Senate Intelligence Committee to substantiate that assertion, and he even invoked the names of the American journalists murdered at the hands of the Islamic State in the course of his pleas for restraint.

"I can tell you,' Udall said, 'Steve Sotloff and James Foley would tell us, don't be impulsive. Horrible and barbarous as those executions were, don't be impulsive, come up with a plan to knock ISIL back.'" . . . please click here for the rest of the post ?

Ray Rice, Abortion, and Being Led About by the Viscera
The gossip web rag TMZ released video this morning of Ray Rice punching his then-fiancee Janay Palmer in the elevator of the Revel Casino in Atlantic City. I'm not going to embed the video in this post; if you are curious enough to actually see it you can Google it and see several versions of it that are variously enhanced. It appears to Palmer and Rice as they enter the elevator (where Palmer apparently swats at Rice while he is walking in front of her). Then the two enter the elevator and Palmer stands in front of the buttons apparently pushing the button for their floor. Rice approaches her to the side, and she raises her arm as if to push him away. At least potentially, this motion struck him in the face, and Rice appears to strike her once in response and move to the other side of the elevator. Then Palmer advances towards Rice and in the only truly clear action of the whole video, Rice unleashes a brutal left hook which knocks Palmer to the ground, unconscious. . . . please click here for the rest of the post ?

Rotherham and the failure of multiculturalism
The awful truth here is that the officials in Rotherham, and probably other places in the UK, had placed a premium on ethnic sensitivity and denigrated the concept of assimilation to the point where uttering the word made you a racist. We're seeing the same shambling, grunting, slouch towards Gomorrah in America. An utterly misogynistic body of law, Shari'a, had been allowed to govern arbitration between private parties. Large parts of our legal profession and educated class see nothing wrong with the grafting onto American life something both foreign and is opposition to American culture. We print ballots in multiple languages when a requirement to receive citizenship is some fluency in English. We've gone from teaching our children about the virtues of the Melting Pot to extolling the virtues of a "salad bowl." . . . please click here for the rest of the post ?

Tom Udall vs. The First Amendment
Pretend moderate Tom Udall (D-NM) has teamed up with avowed socialist Bernie Sanders (Socialist-VT) to pen a lengthy, meandering, hypocritical, and logically challenged piece in Politico describing a constitutional amendment they have submitted that is designed to ensure that only Democrats and socialists can participate fully in the Democratic process. . . . please click here for the rest of the post ?

Dan Bongino's campaign (MD-06) ignored by the media
After the 2010 Census, Maryland Six was gerrymandered to turn it into a Democrat seat by adding a large chunk of reflexively Democrat Montgomery County. I don't have a problem with that because I do believe elections have consequences and if you can't take the time to win them then you have no reason to complain when bad things happen to you. Bad things happen a lot to Republicans in Maryland because one of the most incompetent and instinctively fratricidal state Republican parties in the nation is Maryland's GOP.

This year we have a strong candidate running for Congress in Dan Bongino. . . . please click here for the rest of the post ?

Guess who predicted the anti-Christian discrimination at Vanderbilt and Cal State?
A couple of weeks ago, an article appeared in Christianity Today which re-ignited the interest in the Vanderbilt University policy change in 2011 which removed official student group standing from Christian campus organizations such as the Intervarsity Christian Fellowship (IVCF)*.  The piece was written by a student leader, Tish Harrison Warren, who described how she is apparently "the wrong kind of Christian". . . . please click here for the rest of the post ?

The Blue States' Economic Paradox
Blue states have a problem. Although there are some recently notable exceptions, most vehemently oppose cutting taxes, favoring instead a tax-and-spend or top-down redistribution approach. They require high taxes to finance the pet projects they believe the market is too short-sighted to support, like Solyndra. At the same time, however, these big government states try to pursue goals of economic growth, even if they believe the best way to achieve growth is through central economic planning rather than free markets. . . . please click here for the rest of the post ?

The Vine
While friends and families gathered to celebrate Labor Day (and we unpacked), taxpayer-funded PBS took the opportunity to promote late-term abortionist by airing, "After Tiller." The pro-abortion film follows four late-term abortionists and seeks to create empathy for the hard work they do killing babies. As expected, the film leaves out the details that would reveal the truth about abortion and the men and women who perform them. Not only does the film not show a late-term abortion procedure and/or what it entails, it excludes the perspective of the many women who have been injured by them.  . . . please click here for the rest of the post ?

The Competitive Disadvantage of Principle
Filling in for Rush Limbaugh last week, I had a number of calls from angry members of the middle class who feel they cannot get ahead because the government stands in their way. It reminded me of something I wrote back in 2012, which I think still stands the test of time. There is a growing frustrating within the middle class that Washington is subsidizing the middle class to keep the middle class. In the process, it has prevented members of the middle class from even daring to compete with upper income voters.

In essence, the Democrats and many establishment Republicans, have constructed a complicated system to keep the middle class from ever competing with them and their children. The upper income earners and elite, whose children are members of the "Lucky Sperm Club," can give privilege, benefits, and jobs to their children. Chelsea Clinton and Luke Russert can get great gigs with NBC because of their dads. The children of the rich now get massive access through their parents' campaign donations and political involvement. The parents, in turn, through campaign donations or their positions in government, can also construct Rube Goldberg legal farmeworks to keep those beneath them on the economic scale from ever advancing. . . . please click here for the rest of the post ?

Failing at Life
Police arrested a lady in Atlanta yesterday for blocking traffic as protested the minimum wage outside McDonalds. She told the WSB reporter who interviewed her that "without struggle there is no progress." Then she said she wanted the government to force McDonalds to pay more "so I won't have to struggle."

If you are working your tail off and doing the best you can and, perhaps you have to rely on family, friends, charity, or government to get by, as I said on Rush's show, that's not failing. That's working. And work is rewarding. But if you are in your thirties, making minimum wage in a career, and standing on the street demanding the government do something about it, yes, yes you have failed at life.

Luckily life is longer than failure and you still have time to turn things around when you're in your thirties. But you're definitely failing. If you think it is the government's job to force your employer, who is more likely than not paying you before he pays himself, to raise your wages, you've got a problem and it is not your employer's problem and it is not my problem. Without struggle, there is no progress. Forcing your employer, via government action, to pay you more is not struggling. . . . please click here for the rest of the post ?

Barack Obama Admits Immigration Reform is a Political Issue
This move by the White House shows everyone what you and I have known all along - immigration reform has never been about doing what's morally right. It's about building up a voting base. The funny thing is that the Republicans were suckered in to thinking it would expand their voting base. Even Marco Rubio, who has otherwise been a great force in the Senate, took the side of the reformers (all for the right reasons, but working with people who had no interest in doing things the right way, but simply wanting a conservative, Latin-American face for their amnesty push). . . . please click here for the rest of the post ?

Five More IRS Employees' Emails "Lost" - It Is Time For An IRS Special Prosecutor
The IRS targeted conservative groups in order to silence the opposition during the 2012 election cycle. This isn't really in dispute beyond the left wing progressives, the Obama Admin, and the media, but I repeat myself. Enough evidence, circumstantial and hard, has been presented, including the physical destruction of a government issued BlackBerry, that Republicans should demand a Special Prosecutor. . . . please click here for the rest of the post ?

Putin takes a slap at Obama in Estonia
Late last week, Obama gave speech in Tallinn. It was the typical Obama speech: long on treacly rhetoric and short on substantive actions. In it he specifically told Estonia, Latvia, and Lithuania that NATO would stand by them under Article 5, the article covering collective self defense, of the North Atlantic Treaty. That was Wednesday. Today Vladimir Putin sent his answer. As to be expected, he wasn't shivering with fear and trepidation. . . . please click here for the rest of the post ?
Morning Briefing
For September 11, 2014

This morning we remember those Americans who lost their lives thirteen years ago today when evil came out of the sky and into tall buildings.  The names of the dead that we might remember them.

Didn't Barack Obama Declare the War on Terror Over?
Folks, this speech is what I imagine you'd try to say to your mom if she walked in on you playing with yourself. It was awkward and we've caught the President with his pants down. Now he's scrambling. But at least we can thank heaven that, according to Barack Obama, the Islamic State of Iraq and Syria (ISIS) is neither Islamic nor a state. . . . please click here for the rest of the post ?

93% of Democratic Senate or Governor Candidates Are White
The last primaries ended last night, and down to defeat in the Rhode Island Governor's race went Providence Mayor Angel Tavares, the last chance for the Democrats to nominate a Hispanic candidate for one of the two big statewide offices (Senate and Governor) - while Republicans will be running two Hispanic Governors for re-election, Democrats will not have a single Hispanic candidate heading a statewide ticket. We can revisit my analysis from May of the demographic breakdown of the Democrats' statewide candidates, now that we have final results. In the 71 races they are contesting, 66 of the 71 candidates the Democrats are running (93%) are white, 56 of the 71 (79%) are male, and 53 of 71 (75%) are white males. That could spell trouble for the Democrats' hopes of turning out a voting base that is disproportionately non-white and female. For all the Democrats' rhetoric about race, they are running fewer non-white candidates than the Republicans are, and fewer in races they are seriously contesting. . . . please click here for the rest of the post ?

Ted Cruz's Chief of Staff Move to Campaign Team a Hopeful Sign
If Senator Cruz builds his likely Presidential campaign team just as he built his Senate office team, he may actually have a shot. The good news is that he has taken at least one step in that direction by having Chip Roy, his Senate Chief of Staff, step down from that post to focus more attention on the political side of the business. . . . please click here for the rest of the post ?

Atheist group retreats in attack on religious freedom
Last August, the virulently anti-religious Freedom From Religion Foundation (FFRF) sued the IRS over alleged non-enforcement of the prohibition of political speech by ministers in churches organized as 501(c)3 non-profits. The IRS has long threatened churches with revocation of their tax exempt status based on rules enforcing the Johnson Amendment. which is part of the tax code and not Obamacare. It is important to note here that from the founding of the republic through 1954, when the Johnson Amendment became part of the tax code, there was no prohibition on electioneering by ministers from the pulpit. However, both the IRS and churches know that any court case involving this would probably end up in a resounding defeat for the IRS on freedom of religion grounds. As a result, the IRS sends out nasty threatening letters pretending to enforce the Johnson Amendment and churches, mostly, pretend to comply. The underlying purpose of the Alliance Defending Freedom-sponsored Pulpit Freedom Sunday is to pointedly ignore the Johnson Amendment and provoke the IRS into taking action which would give rise to a court challenge. . . . please click here for the rest of the post ?

EPA Proposed Regulation Would Significantly Hurt Access to Electricity
When talking about energy and environmental policy, it is a bit troublesome to watch just how recklessly big-government environmentalists unfairly and erroneously accuse individuals and organizations of the pro-free market persuasion of being "climate deniers." Instead of engaging in thoughtful, substantive discussion, many of these environmental activists oftentimes resort to this tactic of public shaming in order to eliminate debate and to bully individuals and groups into supporting an ever-expansive federal regulatory scheme. . . . please click here for the rest of the post ?

The 'No Strategy' Strategy
President Obama addressed the nation this past Wednesday night to outline his strategy for combating ISIS. Having declared the War on Terror over, he referred to "terror" in various forms eighteen times in his speech.

The problem is that so many real world facts directly contract what President Obama said in his speech. A man who claims often to not know certain facts because he has not seen the news has clearly not been reading the paper. In his speech, the President said, "It is America that helped remove and destroy Syria's declared chemical weapons so that they can't pose a threat to the Syrian people or the world again." Notice the weasel word "declared." . . . please click here for the rest of the post ?

The Tory Moral Hazard Of Scottish Independence
Scotland will hold a referendum on 18 September 2014 to determine whether or not they will secede from Great Britain. Gordon Brown, David Cameron and numerous other leading politicians are loudly declaiming the idea and pleading with the Scots to vote "No." Cameron even asked the Scots not to "give the effing Tories a kick," claiming that "I care for my country more than my party." This is perhaps what Cameron has to do as Prime Minister. Another part of his brain has to be thinking "Start kicking now you haggis-munching socialists. Don't stop kicking until you've swam North of Selway Firth so we can rebuild Old Hadrian's Wall." This would be mean, this would be petty, this would solidify Tory electoral chances in what would then be left of the British Parliament. . . . please click here for the rest of the post ?

ISIS Speech: a modest strategy with much to be modest about

Wendy Davis and the ennobling of abortion
Texas State Senator Wendy Davis, who is running for governor, has made a fetish of supporting abortion. Her sole qualifying factor in running for governor was her filibuster of a bill restricting abortion, a filibuster that was only possible because the leadership of the Texas legislature grossly mismanaged the bill. In her memoir "Forgetting To Be Afraid," she recounts her personal experience in having two abortions. . . . please click here for the rest of the post ?
