Respect the Status Quo' of Temple Mount
U.S. Ambassador to the U.N. Samantha Power has warned against "provocations" at Jerusalem's Temple Mount, calling on "all sides to respect the status quo of this holy site" but making no mention of recent Palestinian rioting there. Power did not assign blame for the current tensions, but referred to "provocations" there in the context of actions taken by both Israelis and Palestinians that come at the expense of advancing the cause of peace.

U.S. Trying to 'Ignite a Nuclear War'

North Korea is accusing the United States of trying to ignite a nuclear war. Pyongyang pointed to the recent statement that former U.S. Defense Secretary Leon Panetta wrote in his new memoirs. Panetta wrote that the U.S. planned to use nuclear weapons "if necessary" in the event of a North Korean invasion of South Korea. North Korea noted that this is the "first time that a U.S. war boss openly declared that it would use nuclear weapons against the DPRK."

Will Exit Leave Britain with Zero Influence

According to outgoing EU Commission President, Jose Barroso, the UK would have "zero" influence if it voted to leave the EU. Britain could not negotiate with the U.S. and China "on an equal footing" on its own, Barroso said. He also criticized comments by Foreign Secretary Philip Hammond that Britain was "lighting a fire under the European Union" with their proposed referendum.

A Diplomatic Storm is Coming

Five new members were elected to enter the UN Security Council on January 1, 2015 as non-permanent members, while five current non-permanent members will evacuate their seats. Israeli diplomats are saying that in light of the changes, Palestinian President Mahmoud Abbas will likely go for broke and not only turn the UN Security Council to set a deadline for Israeli withdrawal to the 1967 borders by November 2016, but also turn to the International Criminal Court at the Hague.
