25th Anniversary: Fall of Berlin Wall
To mark the 25th anniversary of the fall of the Berlin Wall, the barrier that enclosed East Berlin between 1961 and 1989, Germans and others around the world celebrated and shared memories. At the same time, former Soviet president Mikhail Gorbachev warned that the world is "on the brink of a new cold war". Gorbachev blames the west for sowing the seeds of the current crisis and said "a blister has now turned into a bloody, festering wound."

ISIS Fight in New Phase

According to President Barack Obama, the decision to increase U.S. troop deployments to Iraq isn't a sign the U.S. strategy against ISIS is failing, but rather a signal the campaign is entering a new phase. The additional 1,500 troops are being sent to help train Iraqi army soldiers and militia fighters to battle ISIS on the ground. Obama said the airstrikes were effective, but now ground troops are needed to start pushing ISIS back.

DHS Eyes Next-Generation Biometrics

The Department of Homeland Security is seeking information on the emerging biometrics technologies and services that could replace its current system. DHS's Office of Biometric Identity Management (OBIM) said it is looking ahead to ensure the government stays abreast of new developments. OBIM matches, shares and analyzes biometric data in order to provide biometric identity information to DHS and its partner agencies across federal, state and local governments.

EU Foreign Chief Calls for Palestinian State

The European Union's new foreign affairs chief Federica Mogherini has appealed for the establishment of a Palestinian state, saying the world "cannot afford" another war in Gaza. "It is not only the people of Gaza that can't afford having a fourth war, all the world cannot afford this," she said. "We cannot just sit and wait. If we sit and wait it will go on another 40 years. We have to have action now," said Mogherini.

The saint of death, known as Santa Muerte, is the fastest-growing new religious movement, not only in Mexico and the U.S., according to Andrew Chesnut, a Catholic studies scholar. Santa Muerte's image takes the form of a hooked skeleton. Part of her appeal is that believers see her as a folk saint who is nonjudgemental. Death knows no borders on the frontiers, and so that's also why she has a universal appeal.

Don't Cave to Iran's Demands


Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu has warned the six world powers, including the US, against caving to Iranian demands to pursue its nuclear program, just to meet a November 24th deadline to conclude a deal with Tehran. Israel won't support any agreement that allows Iran to be a threshold nuclear state, Netanyahu said. The West suspects Iran has covertly sought to develop the means to build nuclear weapons.

Raised Concerns Over Third Intifada

Unending violence and political tensions have stoked fears of a new intifada, a widespread Palestinian uprising in the West Bank, East Jerusalem and the Gaza Strip. Two previous intifadas resulted in many deaths. In the second intifada alone, some 500 Israelis and nearly 3,600 Palestinians were killed.
