Nearing Midnight: Captain Kirk and R.A.P.T.U.R.E.

Nearing Midnight: Captain Kirk and R.A.P.T.U.R.E.

Preparing for writing my novel, The Rapture Dialogues, a number of years ago, I consulted with several family members and friends who have a somewhat familiarity with quantum physics. As part of that research and preparation, I needed to try to learn of what might be, in reality, in the works for producing technology that would be along the lines of the old Teletransporter (Transporter) in the Star Trek TV series and movies.

Of course, one is allowed considerable latitude in employing literary license when writing fiction. Nonetheless, even literary license in the matter of novel writing must be governed by what is possible. Spinning yarns must encourage the suspension of disbelief a bit, not attempt to completely throw disbelief out the window.

My thinking when preparing for and plotting the work revolved around presenting a developing technology within a clandestine U.S. government agency that would be a working model like the Star Trek Teletransporter. This would be an instrumentality that could disassemble an object or something of living flesh and blood, move it to another location, and reassemble it. I wanted to create it for purposes of presenting in the fictional storyline and narrative a human answer to what was biblically prophesied to take place when the Rapture occurs.

The world will need answers. Such a Star Trek-like technology might, in my thinking on prophecy, be part of "the lie" of 2 Thessalonians. Here is a part of that prophecy (read all of 2 Thessalonians 2 to get the whole prophecy): "And for this cause God shall send them strong delusion, that they should believe a lie: That they all might be damned who believed not the truth, but had pleasure in unrighteousness" (2 Thessalonians 2:11-12).

This Teletransporter-like instrumentality, so my thinking went, would, in my story, be used to help deceive the whole world with the proclamation that this technology was partially responsible for the massive disappearance that will take place at the time of Rapture.

Naturally, my brain went into "warp-drive," as Star Trek vernacular would have it. I would call the developing technology--that is, the instrument-the R.A.P.T.U.R.E. This would be the acronym for Rapid Atomic Particle Transmolecular Unification Reassembly Energizer.

My-I guess you could say--"warped" brain thus started thinking on these matters again when I received from my friend Chris, who lives in New York City, several articles about a book written by none other than Captain Kirk-William Shatner-that was published, I think, in 2011.

Shatner, now approaching 80 years of age, I think, was as cocky as ever within the pages of his book--Shatner Rules: Your Guide to Understanding the Shatnerverse and the World at Large. (Let's face it: One must, by the very nature of the job to be done, be sure of himself in order to command a starship.)

His statement , which I wish to include here, began with a Captain Kirk-like chiding of his publisher (tongue-in-cheek, I guess), castigating E.P. Dutton for not putting in all capital letters the word "Rules" in the title of the book. He expressed his opinion that it should have read Shatner RULES: Your Guide to Understanding the Shatnerverse and the World at Large. The following verbiage is what got my attention in sparking the writing of this week's "Nearing Midnight" essay.

William Shatner said: "'Beam me up, Scotty.' It is one of the most famous catchphrases in popular culture. Perhaps you've seen it on a bumper sticker, along with the humorous addendum, '...There's no intelligent life down here.' That's a rather haughty commentary on the intelligence of others from someone who likes to litter his/her car with bumper stickers. (NOTE: This is not to be confused with a more 'Rapture-ready' bumper sticker I've seen, which reads "Beam me up, Lord!" Ironically, if the Rapture does occur, Jews like myself aren't supposed to be "beamed up" by God. I can't believe there is such a flaw in the reasoning of people who are awaiting the Rapture! Either way, like it or not God, I'm getting into Heaven. I can negotiate anything!)"

I'll pause here to, as would Mr. Spock, advise our intrepid hero, by now, retired Admiral James T. Kirk--I mean Bill Shatner.

Being Jewish by race doesn't disqualify you from being "beamed up" when the Rapture occurs. Rejecting Jesus Christ as Savior is the only disposition of the individual's soul that will cause a person-be he or she an ordinary citizen-or starship captain on TV and in movies to be left behind when Christ says, "Come up Hither!" (Revelation 4:1).

There will be no negotiating with the Lord of Heaven, Creator of all there is, in the Rapture or when the heartbeat stops-be it negotiating attempted by civilian or starship commander.

When planning the novel, I was told by my quasi-experts that much was, in actuality, being done to find the pathways to producing a Teletransporter-type machine. Mostly the work was taking place in the area of "cloaking devices" rather than actual teletransportation. The ongoing problem was, I was told, the prevention of matter from scattering during the process of disassembling then reassembling the object being moved. It was a matter of space and time physics. I know that is simplistic, but my simple mind understood it in those terms.

I was able to create my R.A.P.T.U.R.E. instrumentality with no problem at all. Well, it seems now that there is a report of progress being made in these very technological matters.

Physicists at the University of Geneva (UNIGE) have succeeded in teleporting the quantum state of a photon to a crystal over 25 kilometers of optical fiber. The experiment, carried out in the laboratory of Professor Nicolas Gisin, constitutes a first, and simply pulverizes the previous record of 6 kilometers achieved ten years ago by the same UNIGE team. Passing from light into matter, using teleportation of a photon to a crystal, shows that, in quantum physics, it is not the composition of a particle which is important, but rather its state, since this can exist and persist outside such extreme differences as those which distinguish light from matter. ("Physicists teleport quantum state of photon to crystal over 25 kilometers," SCIENCE DAILY, Rapture Ready News, September 23, 2014)

Nope. I don't understand it either. But, there it is.

I am currently writing a novel that will at least, I prayerfully hope, continue the fictional development of the technology. I hope to have it finished around the first of 2015. I call it Michael or Miyka'el (Hebrew for Michael). With the tremendous upheaval in the region surrounding Israel, could it be that we are about to see Miyka'el begin to "stand up" for Daniel's people in these coming days (Daniel 12:1)?
