Netanyahu to Obama: Don't allow Iran deal that leaves it at nuclear threshold - By Matt Spetalnick - http://www.reuters.com/article/2014/10/01/us-usa-israel-obama-netanyahu-idUSKCN0HQ4HW20141001
Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu bluntly told U.S. President Barack Obama on Wednesday that he must make sure that any final nuclear deal with Iran does not leave it at the "threshold" of being able to develop nuclear weapons.
Even as Netanyahu pressed Obama over Iran in White House talks, the president urged the Israeli leader to help find ways to prevent Palestinian civilian casualties like those inflicted in the recent Gaza war between Israel and Hamas militants.
Netanyahu's visit was clouded by word of Israel's approval of the planned construction of more than 2,600 settler homes in mostly Arab East Jerusalem.
The White House said the matter came up in the leaders' closed-door talks and warned that it would draw international condemnation, "poison the atmosphere" with the Palestinians as well as Arab governments and call into question Israel's commitment to peace.
Meeting for the first time in eight months, the two leaders, who have a history of strained relations, avoided any direct verbal clash during a brief press appearance and even seemed in sync over the fight against Islamic State militants.
But they were unable to hide their differences on some of the issues that have stoked tension between them.
Underscoring Israeli misgivings at a critical juncture in nuclear talks between Iran and world powers, Netanyahu made clear that he remains at odds with Obama about the course of international negotiations with Israel's regional arch-foe.
"As you know, Mr. President, Iran seeks a deal that would lift the tough sanctions that you worked so hard to put in place and leave it as a threshold nuclear power," Netanyahu said. "I firmly hope under your leadership that would not happen."
The crux of the U.S.-Israeli disagreement is that Netanyahu wants Tehran completely stripped of its nuclear capability, while Obama has suggested he is open to Iran continuing to enrich uranium on a limited basis for civilian purposes.
While Netanyahu put the emphasis on Iran, Obama was quick to focus on the bloody 55-day Gaza conflict, which ended in August with no clear victor. This followed the collapse of U.S.-sponsored peace talks between Israel and Palestinians in April.
"We have to find ways to change the status quo so that both Israeli citizens are safe in their own homes and school children in their schools from the possibility of rocket fire, but also that we don't have the tragedy of Palestinian children being killed as well," Obama said.
The Obama administration had backed Israel's right to defend itself against Hamas cross-border rocket fire, but also voiced rare criticism of Israeli military tactics as Palestinian civilian casualties mounted.
The conflict killed more than 2,100 Palestinians, mostly civilians, according to the Gaza health ministry. Sixty-seven Israeli soldiers and six civilians in Israel were killed.
THINKING 'OUTSIDE THE BOX'
Netanyahu said he remained "committed to a vision of peace for two states for two peoples," but he did not offer any path toward restarting negotiations.
Instead, he suggested there was a need to "think outside the box" and recruit moderate Arab states to advance peace in the region, though he offered no specifics. Palestinians have dismissed this approach as a bid to circumvent direct talks.
Within hours of the talks, both the White House and State Department blasted Israel's housing decision, reported by the anti-settlement watchdog Peace Now, to move forward on the settler housing project slated for construction since 2012.
White House spokesman Josh Earnest declined to speculate whether disclosure of the settlement plan was timed for Netanyahu's Washington visit.
The Obama administration has repeatedly urged a halt to settlement expansion.
Israel annexed East Jerusalem after its capture in the 1967 war, when the West Bank and Gaza were also seized. Citing Biblical roots, Israel regards all of Jerusalem as its capital, a claim not recognized internationally.
The leaders showed no outward tension as they sat side-by-side in the Oval Office. Both were cordial and businesslike. The last thing the White House wanted was a repetition of a 2011 visit when Netanyahu lectured Obama on Jewish history.
But even with calm words, there was little doubt about the lingering differences.
Netanyahu was expected to use the Oval Office meeting to reiterate the warning he issued in his speech at the United Nations this week - that a nuclear-armed Iran would pose a far greater threat than Islamic State fighters who have seized swathes of Syria and Iraq. An Iranian U.N. delegate accused Netanyahu of "propagating Iranophobia and Islamophobia."
Though Israel backs Obama's efforts to forge a coalition to confront Islamic State fighters in Iraq and Syria, some Israelis fear that world powers could go easy on Shi'ite Iran's nuclear program so it will help in the fight against the Sunni Islamist group.
"The president made clear to the prime minister that regional events, including the need to destroy ISIL, won't change our calculus on this issue," said White House spokeswoman Bernadette Meehan. "We must see concrete, verifiable steps that Iran's program is exclusively peaceful."
Netanyahu has cast Iran's nuclear ambitions as an existential threat to Israel. Iran denies it is seeking nuclear weapons. Israel is widely assumed to have the Middle East's only atomic arsenal.
Iran and six world powers ended 10 days of talks in New York last week that made little progress toward a long-term agreement by a November 24 deadline.
White House war on children - Bill Wilson - www.dailyjot.com
It is no stretch of the imagination to say that the occupant of the Oval Office and his Administration are waging war on our children. There has been great push back from parents on the first lady's school lunch program. But that is just window dressing. If you want to get stirred up about something, start thinking in terms of border security and the threat that brings to every child in America from disease to personal security and everything in between. It's as if this "president" has declared war on our children. Currently, health officials are reaching out to some 100 people who may have been in contact with the first Ebola victim in the US. This infected person was in contact with five children in four different schools.
But that is just the tip of the iceberg. On September 28, the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC) issued a Health Advisory to doctors about a mysterious polio-like virus that's causing acute neurological illness and paralysis in children. The cases occurred between August 9-September 17 among children aged 1-18 years old. The nine children all had fever and respiratory illness about two weeks before developing varying degrees of limb weakness. The CDC confirmed that it is considering the possibility that the nationwide outbreak of EV-D68 is causing the polio-like illness. They are asking doctors to report any similar neurological illnesses to the CDC.
WesternJournalism.com reports, "the CDC and our Federal government are completely ignoring the fact that this virus seems to have been spread by illegal immigrants who've been dumped throughout the country - thanks in large part to the [sic] administration. Although it's received very little mainstream media coverage, the current outbreak of EV-D68 is common to El Salvador, Honduras, and Nicaragua, three countries where a bulk of the illegal immigrant children come from. These unaccompanied illegal immigrant children have been allowed into the nation's school systems without medical screenings and without required vaccinations." The site says 25 children in California came down with similar symptoms in February.
The "president's" refusal to stop this massive invasion on our Southern border is endangering our children. The mainstreaming of these illegal children into America's public school system is a direct attack on the well being of our children. Furthermore, with the evidence of Islamic radicals transcending the porous Southern border, there is no guarantee that any government--local, state, or federal--can protect from terrorists attacking our schools. This negligence is unconscionable. As Jesus said in Luke 17:2, "It would be better for him that a millstone were hanged about his neck, and he was cast into the sea, than that he should cause one of these little ones to stumble." Discern and act.
Scaremongering Our Way to Despotism - Todd Strandberg - http://www.raptureready.com/rap16.html
The federal government and the liberal media have long used the fear of terrorism as a key driving force in shaping policy. The need for safety has meant an erosion of our basic civil rights. Every time someone plans to or carries out an act of terror, we lose another chunk of our liberty.
In recent days, alarmism has reached a ridiculous level. Almost any type of incident can trigger a call for more security measures. The panic caused by Omar González, who jumped over a White House fence last week is one such example. He stands accused of scaling the White House perimeter fence and bolting across the lawn and entering the presidential house. González was stopped by a federal agent in the doorway. The president and his family were not even at the White House.
You can tell we are headed down "Crazy Street" when the press openly ask why this man wasn't shot or had attack dogs released on him. The prevailing mindset in Washington would seek to turn the White House into the Kremlin. (Maybe the blueprints for a mote and landmines are now in the works.)
Hardly a year goes by without there being some security event at the White House. Fence jumpers are a minor problem. I remember 20 years ago, Frank Eugene Corder crashed a stolen Cessna 150 into the south side of the White House. In 2011, Oscar Ortega-Hernandez fired nine rounds at the White House with one bullet lodged in a window of the first family's living quarters. I hate to think what the reaction to these past events would be today.
Another problem with scaremongering is the number of times whole communities are being placed in lockdown mode. When in 2013 Boston and its suburbs were told to shelter in place, in other words-stay indoors with doors locked-that incident was labeled as an "extraordinary" event. A year later, lockdowns have become an ongoing occurrence. I did a Google news search and found seven lockdowns so far this month.
As I'm writing, a large part of East Central Pennsylvania has been placed on lockdown after suspect Eric Frein opened fire during a September 12 ambush at the state police Blooming Grove barracks in Pike County. For nearly two weeks, people have been prisoners in their own homes. There is no indication that Frein poses a threat to the general public. The lockdown occurred because law enforcement assumed the right to do so.
This police state mentality is not just in the U.S. Australia's government is seeking broad new security powers to combat what it says is a rising threat from militant Islamists. Prime Minister Tony Abbott has introduced to parliament a measure that would make it a crime for an Australian citizen to travel to any area overseas once the government has declared it off limits.
The granddaddy of all Scaremongering is the liberal media's constant speculation about what will be the terrorists next move. Every time a chemical plant goes up in flames or a gas line leaks and causes an explosion, the question is asked, "Is this another 9-11 attack?"
I was watching a newscast which provided a laundry list of what al-Qaeda or some other Islamist group could do to blow up an airplane. The reporter detailed that they can put explosives in toothpaste tubes, in laptops, or they can be imbedded it into clothing. So there you go Mr. Terrorists, what's the hold up?
The heads of the House and Senate Intelligence Committees, Diane Feinstein and Mike Rogers, are always saying that the terrorists will get us if we don't let the NSA spy on all Americans. Hitler would have made a great NSA head. He knew how to handle all his foes, both real and imaginary.
What has allowed the forces of darkness to steal our freedom is a profound state of apathy on the part of the public. Most people don't see their lives being impacted enough to care about their freedoms.
What may have people so fooled into laziness is the expectation that a dictator will first come and then be followed by autocratic rules. Right now, we are on a track that has the despotism coming first. When the tyrant finally arrives, he will be warmly welcomed by a nation that has already been robbed and brainwashed.
"I am come in my Father's name, and ye receive me not: if another shall come in his own name, him ye will receive" (John 5:43).
Incompetence or brilliant strategist? - Bill Wilson - www.dailyjot.com
During a "60 Minutes" interview, the occupant of the Oval Office blamed his surprise of what he once called the "JV team" rising to power so quickly on a failure in the intel community to recognize the growing threat of the Islamic State. So smugly, he said, "I think our head of the intelligence community, Jim Clapper, has acknowledged that I think they underestimated what had been taking place in Syria." Since this statement, the "president" has been taken to task by the intel community and even anonymous members of his own security staff voicing concern to the news media. Even so, a new government watchdog report indicates the "president" is willfully uninformed when it comes to national security.
Presidential Daily Briefings (PDBs) are the top secret briefings on national security and foreign intelligence provided daily by the Defense Intelligence Agency, the National Security Agency, the FBI and the CIA. These briefs are summaries that are delivered electronically, in paper form, and given in person. This briefing has been conducted since after the failed Bay of Pigs Invasion and before the Cuban missile crisis in June 1961. Since the beginning of 2014, the "president" has attended only 37.5 % of the PDBs, preferring to receive them on his tablet instead. This is no small thing as a President must protect the national security at all costs and understanding these briefings is paramount to decision-making.
Notwithstanding, watchdog Government Accountability Institute updated an analysis of how much time the "president" has spent attending his Presidential Daily Briefs (PDBs), as recorded on the White House official calendar and Politico's comprehensive calendar. The updated study covered his first 2,079 days in office, running from January 20, 2009 through September 29, 2014. Of those, he attended a total of 875 Presidential Daily Briefs for an overall 42.09% attendance rate. During his first term, he attended 42.43% of the 1,461 briefings. During his second term, he attended to date only 41.26% of a possible 618 briefings, according to GAI.
Many will say that the "president" is just incompetent and disengaged when it comes to national security and foreign policy. If, however, one analyzes the body of work in foreign policy and national security by this "president," a conclusion could be drawn that he is intent on elevating Islam at the expense of the United States. Too many Islamic foreign policy initiatives have occurred with his assistance to be coincidence--Arab Spring, the Islamic State, Benghazi, Muslim Brotherhood appointees to the Administration, Islamic visits to the White House and on and on. Jesus said in Matthew 24:4, "Take heed that no man deceive you." So incompetent or brilliant strategist, either way deception is the common denominator.
Obama's cybersecurity adviser: Biometrics will replace passwords for safety's sake
- Guy Taylor - http://www.washingtontimes.com/news/2014/oct/9/obamas-cybersecurity-adviser-biometrics-will-repla/
The days of using a password to access a bank account or cellphone will soon be a thing of the past, President Obama's top cybersecurity adviser said Thursday.
The risk of getting hacked by criminals has grown so widespread that far more sophisticated identification technology - including biometric scanning devices - will become the norm, said Michael Daniel, the White House's cybersecurity coordinator.
"You've started to see some of that with the emergence of the fingerprint readers," said Mr. Daniel, adding that the technology will become increasingly mainstream as cellphone cameras, "hard" card readers and other authentication gadgets replace the annoying process for millions of Americans of punching in a password to confirm their identity.
"Frankly, I would really love to kill the password dead as a primary security method because it's terrible," Mr. Daniel said at an event hosted by the Center for National Policy, Northrop Grumman Corp. and the Christian Science Monitor
Since passwords can so easily be hacked, a variety of new technologies will provide more protection and some "will be biometric related," he said.
Mr. Daniel's comments come against a backdrop of recent friction between the U.S. Justice Department and private tech giants like Apple, which unveiled a host of new privacy features for its iPhones and iPads last month designed to frustrate government snoopers.
Features like fingerprint scanners on phones are popular because consumers believe such advancements will protect them from government intrusions on their private data.
FBI Director James Comey lashed out on the subject in late-September, accusing tech companies of "marketing something expressly to allow people to place themselves beyond the law."
So far the Obama administration has been reluctant to push legislation that would require private companies to take any specific cybersecurity measures.
In February, however, the administration launched a "Cybersecurity Framework," described as the "result of a yearlong private-sector led effort to develop a voluntary how-to guide for organizations in the critical infrastructure community to enhance their cybersecurity."
Mr. Daniel one point told the audience that the administration feels strongly that "market forces" can be trusted to take the lead on guiding private companies toward taking sufficient cybersecurity measures without heavy government intervention.
But he later said there are concerns inside the White House that almost all private companies - when left to their own devices - have a habit of not paying enough attention to cybersecurity threats.
"Expediency will trump cybersecurity every time," he said.
But resistance to putting legal requirements on companies like JPMorgan Chase and others such as Target and Home Depot - two others that have fallen victim to hackers over the past year - stems from the fact that "the speed of regulation does not move at the speed of technology," he said.
The government has to be "mindful" that any regulations will probably be outdated by the time they are issued, he added.
The Obama Administration's Unprecedented Outburst against Israel - Isi Leibler - http://emetnews.org/analysis/obama-administrations-unprecedented-outburst-against-israel.php
The exceptionally vicious U.S. condemnation of Israel with regard to housing construction in the Jewish neighborhoods of Jerusalem is not merely misguided but also reflects irrational bias. Incidentally, this behavior also has many ominous parallels to the inhumane incarceration of Jonathan Pollard, despite pleas for his commutation from all sectors of American society.
The harsh outburst relates to a 2,600-unit housing project planned as an extension of an exclusively Jewish neighborhood adjacent to the suburb of Talpiot and Kibbutz Ramat Rahel both within the Green Line. It incorporates primarily barren land on which Ethiopian and Russian immigrants had been housed temporarily in mobile homes. Highly significant - but a fact that is ignored - is that nearly half of the construction was designated to provide housing for Arabs. Construction permits were approved two years ago but it was the far left-wing group, Peace Now [Shalom Achshav], that saw fit to highlight the issue in a press release on the eve of Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu's meeting with U.S. President Barack Obama in a calculated effort to embarrass the prime minister and provoke tensions.
The successive statements by both the White House and State Department spokesmen must be considered among the most bitterly prejudiced and unbalanced condemnations of Israel ever expressed by the U.S. They make a mockery of repeated claims by the Obama administration that it considers Israel to be a close ally.
White House spokesman Josh Earnest stated, "This development will only draw condemnation from the international community, distance Israel from even its closest allies, poison the atmosphere, not only with the Palestinians [sic] but also with the very Arab governments with which Prime Minister Netanyahu said he wanted to build relations."
U.S. State Department spokeswoman Jen Psaki took it even a step further and said that these construction plans would "call into question Israel's ultimate commitment to a peaceful negotiated settlement with the Palestinians." This outrageous remark will be seen as an attempt by Obama to reassure Palestinian Authority President Mahmoud Abbas that he would still stand by the Palestinians, despite condemnation of Abbas' disgusting U.N. speech, which was also a slap in the face of the U.S.
This was clearly a crafted position. The U.S. is fully aware that the location for this construction is in the heart of Jerusalem's Jewish neighborhoods and will always remain under Jewish sovereignty. They also conveniently overlooked the fact that this particular project was to include Arab housing.
To compound matters, the administration also condemned the legitimate purchase of seven residential homes by Jews in the Silwan Arab neighborhood of Jerusalem. In so doing the Obama administration is endorsing the PA's policy of preventing Jews from buying homes in Arab-populated areas of Jerusalem. This, despite the fact that Arabs live freely among Jews in west Jerusalem and throughout Israel. The U.S. is therefore validating the "Judenrein" ethnic cleansing policies of Abbas, who had the gall to accuse Israel of being an apartheid state in his recent belligerent U.N. address.
The U.S. statements unequivocally exhort other countries - including Israel's "closest allies" - to condemn Israel over this routine municipal construction which contrary to utterly uninformed allegations, in no way undermines a two state solution. Not surprisingly, they have already been echoed by individual European countries and the European Union, which also called "into question Israel's commitment to a peaceful negotiated settlement."
They went so far as to convey the message to moderate Arab states that Israel is "poisoning the atmosphere," discouraging them from reciprocating Netanyahu's efforts to reach out and develop a new relationship with them.
The bitter attack on Israel for construction in the Jewish neighborhoods of its own capital is unique not only because of the disproportionate ferocity of this public condemnation of an ally but also when viewed in the broader context. Setting aside the Gaza war and the histrionic attacks against Israel by Abbas at the U.N. General Assembly, it is impossible to comprehend such a reaction against the backdrop of regional events. Entire countries - Iraq and Syria - are imploding; literally millions have been displaced from their homes and become refugees; over 200,000 were murdered in Syria alone; barbaric decapitations of innocent people which are publicly circulated on the Internet. Yet, it is against the background of this maelstrom that the U.S. sees fit to condemn and isolate its most devoted ally, the sole democratic state in the region and the only place where chaos does not prevail. Why? Because two years ago, the municipality of its capital, Jerusalem, approved a housing project in a Jewish neighborhood (which would also provide housing for Arab residents).
The irrationality and severity of these rebukes of Israel, encouraging other "friends" to join in the condemnation, suggests that Obama remains obsessively determined to force Israel to adopt his approach. And this, despite the events of recent months and his own admission in his U.N. speech that he had hitherto erred in asserting that the Israeli-Palestinian conflict was a major impediment to regional stability.
No responsible Israeli government could ever contemplate acquiescing to such demands. We must never apologize for building homes in Jewish Jerusalem and there is an element of insanity in the U.S. condemning us for doing so.
Netanyahu speaks on this matter on behalf of the entire nation. This is not the approach of a particular government. It reflects the consensus - other than the extreme left-wing Meretz and marginal post-Zionist groups. This is a time for us to stand up and be counted. Opposition Leader MK Isaac Herzog should speak up as a genuine Labor Zionist leader and state that his party is at one with the government regarding construction in Jerusalem. Should he fail to do so, he will be turning his back on the Labor Zionist ideals of Israel's founders and his Labor party will become a discredited delusional left-wing marginal group.
The response of the American Jewish leadership is also crucial. They have until now displayed a reticence to respond publicly to biased statements on Israel expressed by Obama. But this will put them to the test. If the leaders fail to speak out against such a vicious attack which effectively encourages other countries to join in exerting pressure on Israel, it will be perceived as dramatic erosion of their political influence and their community standing. The American Israel Public Affairs Committee (AIPAC) should now actively launch a public information campaign, speak out robustly about Israel's rights in Jerusalem and make a concerted effort to canvass support from members of Congress.
If Obama can behave in such a contemptuous manner towards Israel five weeks before congressional elections, one is left with a chilling feeling that we may see even more unfortunate initiatives during the remaining term of office of this president who seeks to distance himself from Israel as he simultaneously engages with rogue states and appears determined to rehabilitate Iran.
