States that were awarded grants from President Obama's Race to the Top (RttT) stimulus bill program agreed to implement the Common Core standards and to comply with the "Four Assurances, including building a data system off-limits to parents." From banking to dating, if you don't know who you are dealing with, you are vulnerable to fraud or deceit. Facebook, Google and Twitter are all trying to make their accounts a form of I.D., but these are issued without verification. What is needed is a reliable state-backed electronic passport such as what is being worked on in the Baltic state of Estonia. If Estonia's scheme takes off some other countries may well decide to follow its lead.

'Any Means Necessary' to Stop Hamas
Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu said Sunday he will use "any means necessary" to stop Islamic militant group Hamas from bombing civilians. The prime minister spoke as Israeli ground troops moved into the Gaza Strip. The troop movement also has prompted concerns of a possible full-scale ground war. Israel has launched more than 1,300 airstrikes since the offensive began, while Palestinian militants have launched more than 800 rockets at Israel.

Rocket Hit Israel After Ceasefire Collapses
Nearly fifty rockets were fired into Israel after an Egyptian brokered ceasefire collapsed. Defense Minister Moshe Ya'alon then ordered the Israeli Air Force to resume strikes over Gaza. The Israeli security cabinet had endorsed Cairo's proposal to meditate the conflict with the Palestinian extremists, but warned that if they continued to fire rockets, Israel would hit back with "all possible force."

Merkel may Leave Chancellor's Post
Chancellor Angela Merkel's government remains under unprecedented pressure due to the long-running scandal over U.S. surveillance in Germany. According to a recent report, Merkel is ready to quit before the end of her term to chair the European Council. If Merkel were to resign early, she would become the first German leader since 1949 to leave office voluntarily before their term in office ends. There has been speculation that Merkel may seek to succeed Ban Ki-moon as U.N. Secretary-General.

Given the Right to Ban God
A school in California says it will not apologize to a teenager who defiled its orders and mentioned God in his graduation speech. Attorneys have written a one-page letter defending the school's right to ban any speech that references God or Jesus. Liberty Institute, the law firm representing the student, has demanded that the school apologize for censoring the boy's speech and that it guarantee future graduation speakers will not face censorship.

U.N. may Intervene in US Border Crisis
Representatives of the United Nations High Commissioner for Refugees, or UNHRC, are discussing the possibility of extending U.N. protection to thousands of Central American crossing the U.S. border with Mexico illegally by defining them as "refugees" who are seeking asylum. A 30-year old U.N. declaration on the rights of refugees was cited in a 10 nation meeting in Nicaragua of ministers of the interior from the U.S., Mexico and various Central American countries.
